Sounds like you're looking for games with RPG elements. An old-but-good game in that genre is Anachronox, if you can find it around. Also system shock 2.

I have to agree with System Shock 2 here. If it's just Sci-fi and not necessarily the RPG aspect then both Half life's need to be played.... Give us more info and we'll help you out. Check your messages.

hmm... i guess i like games where u get thrown into a world u can explore and stuff like that... without constantly worrying about getting killed... i tried half-life 1 and didnt like it cuz of just that... on the other hand i enjoyed Call of Duty lol...

It sounds like you really need to play Final Fantasy 6,7,8,9, and X. Chrono trigger, Chrono cross, zelda series, Baldur's gate 1 & 2.... :D
My top pics are Chrono Trigger & chrono cross, and Final Fantasy 7.

Fallout 1 - 2 are classic RPGs. Turn-based combat so you have time to think and don't need catlike reflexes.

if you like Fallout, try Arcanum. it's like a steampunk fallout.

i second Anachronox and System Shock 2.

or go read Neuromancer!

For exploring, the fantasy RPG Morrowind is about as expansive as you can get. There are areas in the world that have more difficult opponents, but there is no strict limitations as to where you can and cannot go once you finish the brief tutorial section.

Fallout (Sci-Fi RPG) also delivers that feeling, although it's somewhat more restricted. For newcomers, the dated isometric engine can be a put-off, but it's more than worth the irritation.
