Help me choose an amp?

With a cherry on top^ ^

I'm looking for a decent amp to power some infinity kappa 6X9 speakers with a

RMS of 110W and a peak of 300 the speakers are running at 2ohms

so... I'm looking for a 50W two channel amp.... I think?

I was looking at this amp: Rockford Fosgate Punch P2502

But it runs at 125 RMS... I know I could just turn down the gain but I was just wondering if anyone else and any idea what I should get instead. I don't really know if one brand is better than the other....

It's been a while but Rockford Fosgate amps used to be good. Crutchfield has a good return policy so buy it and try it.

Fosgate makes decent higher end amps, I don't much like the lower end stuff at all. For the price it's not a bad amp, don't get me wrong. but a little more money can get you better sound.
2 Channel, and since you probably don't want to break the bank.

MTX Thunder

Kicker ZX

Infinity Reference

The Infinity amp is a bit more money, but they sound extremely clean. Remember when looking at amps most won't list the RMS power, but in general a very aggerated spec.
An amp may say 500 watts, but won't push your speakers very well. Kicker is good, the ZX line isn't close to the SX, but it's a quarter of the price. Always loved MTX. I believe Circuit City carries all 3 of the amps I referenced, they have some good sales on amps usually. If $200 is within your budget go with the Infinity, beautiful amp with a crazy amount of control. Kappas are pretty warm sounding 6x9's, and you can push them watts wise, they'll handle the power.

thanks for the replies! That infinity is spendy... mabe I'll get it though.

» 97 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms (142 watts x 2 at 2 ohms)
» 283 watts RMS x 1 bridged output at 4 ohms (4-ohm stable in bridged mode)

... the 6by 9s are rated at 110RMS and the amp would be able to push 142. ... I plan on getting subs later on but they'll have to be powered by another amp. so... both the kicker and the mtx look nice too... I just donno what to get! >_<

Any more suggestions to get me on my way? lol

I have had a handful of sub amps over the years. All of them have had problems with overheating and shutting off. Because my sub amp is just to power my 12" sub, I don't care much for quality.

The day my Kenwood Excelon ($500) amp went bad, I went to best buy and got a $40 opened box Lightning Audio mono amp as a temporary replacement. That was 3 years ago. I can't believe that thing still works and seems to have more power than the Excelon or XPlod amps I had in the past.

My other favorite was the old RF Punch45. 45W? Yeah right! RF way underestimates their power ratings. A standard Punch 45 would out power a Kenwood/Sony/JBL/MTX 500W by far.

I would stick with RF.

I have the Kappa's you own in my rear doors, and kappa perfect 6.5's in the front, driven by the Infinity 4 channel amp. Sounds killer.

My Infinity amps constantly show me that they are under-rated power wise, as they will push a bit more than there ratings say they will. I think JBL actually builds the infinity amps.

Absolutely false. When you turn the volume down you don't destroy your speakers. I don't know who came up with this myth but I'm guessing it was somebody trying to sell a high-powered amplifier.

He's talking about cranking an amp pass it's 'safe zone' thus producing nasty harmonics that will fry your tweeter first. It is not a myth, control is the issue.

You're right, it's just phrased poorly.

If you're planning on adding a sub, why even bother with a 2 channel now and another amp later? Buy a 4 channel, run your fronts off the 2 channels, and when you get the sub you can bridge the other 2 channels and power the sub nicely. That's assuming you aren't going for a JL w7 type sub that eats up tons of wattage. The Infinity 4 channel would be perfect, and the price isn't too bad, I think around $299. Would push your Kappas and a decent sub, like lets say a Kicker Comp VR with no problems. and sound wonderful.

So as far as pushing my 6X9s I just turn down the gain then... by how much? how can u tell how much to turn it down so you don't hurt the speakers?

I was thinking of just getting a 4ch. I just don't know if I'm going to be puting those extra speakers in the front doors just yet if ever lol. And as far as subs go I'm looking for some tight pretty powerful sounding sub(s)? I don't care for the trunk rattlers. Help?

:? Hmmm I donno lol this is my first time doing this stuff so although the probably are pretty good I think I'm gonna have to go with one of the bigger brands like infinity, alpine, mtx, etc.:\???

O and is kicker that great? They seem to be over hyped

Some 2 channel amps support tri-mode operations, so you won't need another amp to drive one additional subwoofer.

We are just giving you better options over these mass marketed products. It's up to you whether you want to take our recommendations or not.

When i bought my amp earlier this year i was debating over the Alpine or the Infinity, got the Alpine and love it. My friend has a RF and it gets REALLY hot.

Hmmm What made you get the alpine? O and what size amp did ya buy? speakers its powerin?

EDIT: kt, I've thought about the tri thing but the sub(s) i'm looking at are at 300RMS and most of the tri converter things can't handle that much current

I donno 😱 I'm thinking for right now I'll prob get a 2 ch amp? I donno🙁 I'm not sure if I'll be adding more speakers in my car besides a sub or not

Zapco, JL Audio, etc. are bigger names than infinity and alpine, depending on what you mean by big name. They are extremely well-regarded. They might not be sold everywhere, but I am fairly certain most of your local non-best buy car audio stores will sell them. Also, your local shops might give you better prices than crutchfield on infinity and alpine too. I know my local shop is generally 5-10% cheaper than crutchfield. There are a couple of JL audio dealers in fargo, for example.
