Most likely, I'll be getting this system as I mentioned in another thread:

AMD CERTIFIED 350 WATT MED TOWER CASE 350 WATT
NEW AMD XP-1800+ [1.53 GHZ QUANTISPEED] 266 FSB CPU C-MX104
SHUTTLE AK31 V3.1 KT266A DDR 4X AGP MB (is this an ok stable motherboard?)
512 MB PC2100 DDR PC266 MEMORY
AMD CERTIFIED CPU FAN, HEATSINK AND 3 EXTRA FANS
MAXTOR 40 GB 7200 RPM ATA 133 HARD DRIVE
16x DVD ROM
CREATIVE LABS SB LIVE VALUE 5.1
SPEAKERS
PCI 56K V.90 FAX MODEM/W VOICE
1.44 MB FLOPPY DR.
KEYBOARD
MOUSE
3 YEAR PARTS AND LABOR WARRANTY

So far, is this a good system? Is everything compatible? I did some searching around and it seems for the most part, people are happy with the shuttle mobo. Anyway, my main question is what video card I should get with this system. I'm not a HUGE gamer but I like to game and I would like for them to look decent and run smoothly. I'm mostly a 2d person. I'm mostly on the net or doing other non-game app type stuff. Also, I will not be overclocking at all. Keeping all that in mind, of the following cards, can you guys recommend me the best video card:

ATI RADEON 8500 LE 128 MB AGP DDR W/VIDEO OUT
Geforce 4 Mx440 64 mb ddr/w tv video out
Geforce 4 ti 4200 128 mb ddr/ w tv video out (this is one is significantly more expensive than the other two and I'd rather not get it unless there would be a huge difference for me in performance)

I personally think the 8500 LE would suit me fine. I appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

I have owned two Shuttle AK31A and have great expierence with them............just make sure to have the latest Via 4in1 Driver installed and that board is rock stable. If your not too much into gameing the Radeon 8500LE is a great choice.............new egg has saphire 8500LE 128mb cards for $119.........just load the latest Catalyst drivers and you are set!

There is a significant difference between the Ti4200 and 8500 LE; just look at Anand's GPU shootout on the front page. But I do agree with human2k in saying that if you're a not a big gamer then get the 8500 LE.

a big difference but the 8500LE is not a bad card...

How about a more basic 64mb TI4200 card instead of a 128mb version? It should cost around $150-160 and outperform a 128mb 8500LE($120).

Thanks for the responses guys.
Fulcrum, yeah that would have been ideal but the place I'm getting my pc built at doesn't have the 64 mb version. I've pretty much decided on the ti4200 128 since it's only 36 bucks more than the radeon; less than I expected.

Another question.
What would be the best card for watching DVDs? I watch dvds more than I game. Should I get the Radeon instead?

Make sure you know the difference between the Radeon 8500 and the 8500LE - they're not the same at all! For the same money as an 8500LE, you can get a full-blown Radeon 7500 with better performance, especially for DVDs.

Send me a PM if you want help finding a deal on an OEM-version 7500 - unless you like to pay more for pretty cardboard boxes 😀
