hi..i'm planning to get a dsl router...will be using it to share my dsl connection (1 pc and 1 laptop). I did some research and came down to 2 choices...Netgear rp114 and SMC 7004vbr...i can get them at a low price from a local shop...

i found that the netgear rp114 is quite an old model (2001)...so will it be ok to get it ? main requirements for the router is reliable...easy to setup...
the SMC model seems to have one problem...i read it from some website and they say it runs hot after some time...and will end up hanging...

so now the question is...is it ok to get the older model netgear ? or the SMC is overall better than the netgear ?
help me choose... :)

While SMC in general is no better than Netgear, and vice versa.

The SMC 7004VBR has a nice advantage. If necessary it can put 10 computers on the DMZ, and it has more flexible settings.

The heat issue? I think it is a specific unit issue. I have few of them, none get too hot.

Linksys BEFSR41 is very common and proven, the BEFSX41 is not as proven but has more future.

D-Link DI-604 is common and proven.

JackMDS, it's interesting that you recommend the VBR, I've heard very bad things about them. Maybe newer firmware fixes those problems? The BR and ABR were pretty solid.

I normally use and recommend Linksys for people who want a SOHO box.

The original poster here asked about two specific items.

If you notice in his profile the gentleman is from Malaysia. You can not send him to your Local main street Megastore to buy what currently is promoted in your area of the US.

In my opinion the 7004VBR is preferable because it has few capacities that do not exists in the BEFSR41

I tend to have a different approach between:

1. Business that need a ?Fleet? of Hardware.

2. A Professional Installer that has to take his own business into account, and needs to stick to one or two items that provides the best balance of quality, ease of maintenance, and price.

3. A Home user that needs a single item and thus can buy according to his specific needs and price.

Linksys? Their price is usually some what higher than the rest.

I would not hesitate to recommend specifically WAP11, WET11, and the new 802.11g hardware,

As far the rest of the Entry Level Linksys. They are not worse or better than anything else so I go by the price.
