Help me choose a processor!

I can get either of the above for my box.

The D945 is 2x3.4GHz, the Core 2 Duo is 2x1.86GHz.

I know the Core architecture is going to be more instructions per clock, but I don't know enough to make an informed decision.

Anyone have a link to a side-by-side comparison of these two procs?

At the top of this page there is a CPU tab containing many charts with the awesome power of knowledge infusion. Chew the mind-food and be ensmartened!

Maybe wait until after the first of the year - looks like more choices and -possible price drops for Core Duo, etc.

Quad

Depends... will this computer be used for gaming, general use, or space-heating?

For gaming, definately Core 2 Duo.

For general use (web surfing, email, etc.) either will suffice, but Core 2 Duo is definately a better future investment.

If you're trying to keep warm in your cold room, definately Pentium D.

I'm putting that in my sig. Anyway, yes, there are several reviews comparing C2D and the PDs, but they don't compare at all.
If you're an old timer, it's like a 486 vs a Pentium. If you're not an old timer (or someone that reads stuff like the 486 article on wikipedia for fun) let's just say that if a Pentium D were a tommy gun, a Core 2 Duo would be an M1-A2 Abrams.

EDIT: That goes for bang/buck as well as sheer bang

Just please chew with your mouth closed. The sight of overbrightened choppers from silicon dust is annoying. Not to mention the sound of slapping lips! 😀
