help me choose a new cps cooler *Updated*

i have an amd 6400 and an 8800gtx overclocked inside a xclio wtbk advanced case paired with a zalman 9500. in my hardware monitoring in bios as well as nvidia's temp monitoring im seeing my cpu idling at 53c and and topping out at 63c under full load for 30+ minutes. I want cooler temps than these as well as at least a slightly quiter method of cpu cooling. the case is of couse big enough for whatever cooler i want but dont know which one to go with.

i like the :
cooler master hyper 512
zalman 9700
ocz vandette 2
scyth infinity
and thermalright ultr 120 extreme

basically i want to get my cpu to stay at or below 50c under full load while remaining under 50db

help ! and thank you

im also considering the Noctua NH-U12P too
i do know that i dont want a hs/fan thats so darn big and heavy that i would have to bracket it and never be able to move my case around without worrying about crackin my mobo.

I think you meant Coolermaster Hyper 212, which isn't worth the money.
It's as cheap as a Vendetta 2 but not as performant as one.

Zalman 9700 IS a great cooler, nickel plated base resulting in awesome performance. Problem is, performance/price ratio is off... It's too expensive for it's performance.

OCZ Vendetta 2 - great cooler, new technology (infact it's older technology with a different approach, it's basically a standard tower cooler w/o baseplate) and it's cheap! seen it go down to as low as 40$ GREAT price for a very performant cooler. Personally i don't trust it's base, but that't just my opinion.

Scythe Infinity - Good ol' reliable cooler, always up for the job, just like the Tuniq Tower 120 (which i'm prowd to own, Q6600@3.4GHz 33/33/28/28). Good price, very good performance and very quiet.

TRUE 120 was rated as the best air cooler... however, you also needed nerves of steel and a steady hand... 90% of TRUE's needed lapping which all say is necessary for this cooler. The black version's out, maybe it's flat, don't know yet.

Use AS5 or IC Diamond with every one of these coolers, stock TIM is crap in most of the cases.

UPDATE: That's waaaaay to expensive for what it can do, I'm not saying it's not good, hell no, it's a great cooler, just way too expensive, you can get better at lower prices. Mobo won't crack, trust me, just don't move it around as much as you normally would. In that case, the Vendetta 2 is lighter and a bit better.

Further update upon research: Xigmatek's 1283 is even lighter: ~550g with fan on

from what i can see the scyth ninja is a great performer very quiet and not very heavy. could it be the winner. any opinions on the scythe ninja?

It probably wont cool as well as the Xigmatek 1283 or OCZ Vendetta 2 which typically cost the same or less. And at 770g w/ fan its not a lightweight.

I just picked up a Xigmatek 1283 and I was looking for a quiet, relatively lightweight, high performing HSF that cost less than $50

Direct Touch Heatpipe is all the rage right now.... and as it should be, it's putting up good numbers. If I were to go air, I'd look at what's proven to perform the best at the time of purchase and go with that. Keep doing research and hopefully you can find some good comparison testing out there to help with your decision. Most people here are just going to recommend what they have sitting on top of their CPU anyway 🙂

I can see your logic theplaidfad and its good logic too. Using that logic it would appear my 3 choices would be between these

xigmatek 1283
thermalright ultra 120
scythe mungen aka ninja rev B

according to this chart http://www.frostytech.com/arti...?articleid=2233&page=4 the xigmatek 1283 on low setting is very effective at cooling and supremely quiet at doing so.

Q - those who own a xigmatek, does it really cool as well as the reviews show it does on the LOW setting? Is its sound niticeable on high?

A 10 degree separation between idle and load says you have a good cooler, you need more fresh air to the heatsink. Do your temps change dramatically with the side open?
I think those fans cause a conflicting airflow.

didn't realize the 1283 had a low setting, lol.

but, i honestly can't hear it over the rest of my fans. my PC isn't totally quiet though. but unless your PC is dead quiet, it shouldn't be noticeable. and yes, it cool pretty well. on par with a TRUE.

Ive been thinking about grabbing the Vendetta 2 myself. I have a Abit IX38 QuadGT mobo and Cooler Master CM690. Think this bad boy will fit?

its the new model that does the first model has only one speed

i guess im gonna buy a thermalright 120 and put 2 x Scythe S-FLEX SFF21D fans on it. 2x 9db is only 18db so that sould be great airflow on a great heatsink right?

to answer woodbutchers question, taking the side off increses idle to 60 while leaveing the side on with the 2 large side fans off puts it at about 58. right now at full speeds my cpu is idling at 54c

Sometimes A SCREENY is worth 1000 words! 😀

Current temps...

Tuniq Tower 120 on a Intel P4 Extreme Edition OC @ 3825 MHz

Nvidia GeForce 7600GT with 6600GT Reference Fan

with the size of my vid card i cannont mount any other way than i did, and i know its mounted properly. im using ac5 as my tim. with a room temp of about 25c i guess it should be sitting at 48-49c but it idles absolutely no less than at 53c. you have to consider i have an 8800gtx bfg oc version and it sits directly below my cps hs/fan. when ive been gaming for over 30minutes the top of the card is hot enough to burn flesh is trying to cook my cpu and everything else underneath.

wth is going on, isnt this thing supposed to be gods gift to air cooling?

Newegg reveiws mean squat. You can get a feel for the item but if a user posts his temps as 18c we know he's clueless or outside in the snow. No doubt it's a good cooler, on par with Thermalright and cheaper.
Also, cut out that grill blocking the rear fan, this will make a difference removing heat from the area.

holy crap woodbutcher, youve been one of the most helpful and insightfull peeps ive run into on anand's forums, thank you. i used to be more active on these forums a couple years ago but gave up after i got so little actual help and so much damm flamage. and i cant believe i never thought to cut out the worthless grill blocking airflow myself 😛 thanx again.

Thank you, things like this I learn from and add to what little knowledge I have. I'd really appreciate you to post your end results, if it helps great, if not I'll keep offering useless advice and thoughts to try another direction.
There are many more tech savvy, helpful people here. The fact that this is an open forum is a fantastic thing, say I were to offer completely wrong information,, I have before,,, there are several that will step up and correct or offer other thoughts.

I don't know what case fan you have in the back but less restiction will improve any fan, it also will lower the noise level a little. Get out the dremel and sandpaper, snips, nibblers or just grab an angry beaver by the tail. If you use blue painters tape and paper you may be able to do the job w/o removing all your hardware, electronics are not happy w/ metal filings scattered about.
keep us posted.

today i went to my local frys and bought a zalman 9700 NT. i dl'ed asus probe II as well as speedfan ver 4.34 Im getting readings playing cod 4 on all max settings in game of
speed fan
tmp1 43c
tmp2 39c
tmp3 73c

pcprobe II
cpu 43c
mb 39c

its currently 23c amb

xclio case (probe placed ontop zalman very close to mobo just under the ram)
inside reading 29c

i like these numbers except the temp3 ?? wtf??

the zalman is spinning at no less than 2667 rpm !!! and is comparable to a hairdryer in my case. i will be ordering a xigmatek hdt-s1283 very soon. i know the vendetta2 is supposed to be better than in a few reviews but i just have had bad luck with ocz products in the past and am sceptical of thier overall quality. i hope the xigmatek hdt-s1283 will provide => results to the zalman and do so in a much quiter manner of which i exptect it to considering its top out rpm is like 1600 or 1800 rpm and according to many reviews outperforms the zalman 9700nt on high in every report.

I went from a Coolit Systems Eliminator to the OCZ Vendetta 2 and couldn't be happier.
Right now Ambient 20c Prime 95 hits 51-53c idles 34 36. And it's quieter too.Course YMMV.One thing I did differently was to use the TR 775 bolt-thru kit as I hate the push-pins.lol
