Help me Choose a HardDive! and Diagnose problem.

Hey guys. I'm new here, and I need some advice. My current harddrive suddenly isn't working properly anymore. It's a 20.5gig IBM 34GXP that I purchased a year ago or so. Anyway, I had the computer running an ftp server overnight a couple of days ago. There was a lot of downloading and uploading going on ;-). In any event, the next morning my ingenious brother went to check his email right when he got out of bed. He thought the computer was off (don't ask me how) and pressed the power button...so he turned it off in the middle of a lot of file transfers without shutting down the computer. Ever since then, my computer stutters every once in a while like it is severely accessing the disk. This severely bogs down my system. It also causes some cd burns to fail. I've tried everything too. I even tried a low level format. Although it improved a bit, it still does it from time to time. I have it connected to the highpoint ata100 port on my Soyo-6ba+100 board. I tried plugging it on the regular ide, but it still had problems. (Yes I even switched the drive to ata33 mode). This is really strange, but I've decided I will buy a new hard drive, but I need help deciding. I really don't want to get an IBM drive even though 75GXP model is praised. Any thoughts? Should I get the Maxtor DiamonMax plus, Western Digital, or Quantum Drive? Thanks! 😕

You are going to get a LOT of replies on which is the better brand here.....I would probably only recommend Quantum from my side. I haven't tried IBM, only Western Digital, Quantum, and Seagate. Quantum are the only ones that don't screw up on me and I think they are the quietest. But just make up your own mind after reading some reviews on sites like Anandtech 🙂
