Schwinn makes ellipticals that are just about as good as precor at 1/2 the money.

I own an elliptical and the workout is not as good as if I were outside running, I even have it at max resistance. On the elliptical I "cheat" by shifting my weight from left to right, this causes the pedals to move and the motion carries me to the next step. it's only like 1/2 a workout.

Also keep in mind that on the elliptical your feet are kept further apart then if you were running outdoors (because of the 'track' and spacing issues the foot pads are on). I believed this caused some of the problems I feel in my knee and as a result I no longer use my elliptical machine after 8 months of heavy use (6 miles a day 5 days a week).

I bought a $300 rowing machine and it gives me a much better workout. For rowing machines get a wind resistance one. Just wait for sports authority to have a Friends and Family deal and buy it then.

this is the one I have and it is the cheapest one I would consider getting.

there is a $200 air resistance rower - Fitness Quest Integrity 3000 Air Rower - which reviews said it was pretty good for $200, but it was still crap.

go to the store and try them out. make sure you get a good warrenty from a reputable brand.

don't sacrifice quality for all kinds of different programable workouts.

oh and they can get damn noisey so make sure you get a quiet one if noise is an issue (nothing like 5am workouts that wake up the whole house..)
