I would bet that an oscillating fan would work. Just turn the mechanism sideways, attach your phone to it, and watch it bounce up and down for hours on end.

Damn, I missed this one, EXCELLENT idea!!! I think I have one at the house somewhere to try it as well lol!

Another vote for how about not cheating.

Sigh. If I had more time I wouldn't cheat, I assure you. Its not my fault they are killing me at work yet at the same time ask me to compete in this thing lol. I'm like Michael Jordan, I do NOT lose. EVER.

Treadmill you basically stand in one place while floor under you moves no? You have to move horizontally materially to have steps registered.
FWIW my Google Fit recognizes and registers steps when I run on the treadmill, even though I'm moving horizontally.

If your phone is rooted I wonder if there is some log file you could upload to fool Fit into thinking you took more steps than you actually did.

You're nothing like Michael Jordan, he got his off off the chair and exercised. And he didn't cheat to win.

Quit trolling. I AM exercising. I just don't have time to walk all day to win technically. And that is not my fault. If work was not LOADING ME UP with a tons of work, I WOULD walk all day. But I can't because they are loading me up with work. Hence while I am getting to the same place as I would be if they had NOT loaded me up. I'm not going to lose because they chose to screw me.

You really should look up the definition of "troll". Go ahead, it's something you can do without prying your fat ass out of the chair, no cheating required.

But since you appear to be too lazy to do anything for yourself, let me help you. "Troll" does not mean "somebody who disagrees with SaltyNut's latest plea for attention." The proper definition of "somebody who disagrees with SaltyNut's latest plea for attention" is "perceptive".

There, no googling required.

He said that it was a work exercise competition, which probably means that it has a cash prize.

Once you start offering cash rewards in a office setting, cheating should practically be expected. Salty's real goal is just not to cheat too much, so he only wins by a small margin.

1. I ask for legit help with a legit competition.

2. You come on here and talk shit.

3. You are therefore a troll.

4. MODS - ATTENTION - he expressly called me a fat ass, lazy, etc.. The guidelines say no personal attacks allowed. He should be banned!

Agree 100%. I assure you the other peeps are trying to figure out how to game the system as well. Its like being in a bodybuilding contest, and knowing everyone else is on juice, but not doing juice myself because I don't want to "cheat" lol. But yea, if like the most steps someone else has is 106,000, I don't want to have 400,000, I just want to have like 110,000 to not clearly indicate I gamed the system lol.

Cheaters with "morals". ;)

That could be a new reality show on A&E.

Have you ever done one of these work office exercise competitions? Cheating is rampant. Odds are that the current "leader" is handing off their phone to their kids while they are playing outside and racking up 20,000 steps a day.

We're just helping a fellow Anandtech member even the odds. :)

If you had a KitchenAid stand mixer, you might be able to attach your Fitbit or Smartphone to the dough hook attachment and let if flail around on the "low" setting for a few hours. Just be careful, I wouldn't want you to break your phone while trying this.

Just put it on a dog/pet and have them run around for you. Play fetch. Let them outside. Let them play with other dogs, etc...

I know people cheat on their taxes as well, but it doesn't mean I use that fact to justify what I do. And Ii sure as hell wouldn't ask how to do it on computer forums, and then whine about it when the thread goes south. ;)

I initially stayed out the thread, but when I saw the "I only want to cheat a little bit" responses, I couldn't resist any longer.

No, you didn't ask for legit help, you asked us to help you cheat. The people who provided actual legit help were the ones who told you to get your ass out of the chair and take a walk. And you called them trolls too.

You are too lazy to get out of the chair to take a walk, too lazy to cheat yourself and too lazy to look up the word troll, which is why you so childishly continue to use it to mean anyone that disagrees with you. Calling you lazy is not an attack, it's an accurate description.

What do you do for work? Most workplaces seems pretty slower right now with coronavirus.

Strap it to your wrist!

But seriously, attach it to a corded electric drill, rubber-band the trigger down, and just lay back and let it do its magic.

Wait...
