I'll get straight to the point folks, my sister got a Canon PowerShot A40 and she hates it. It turned out to be a bum camera and it has been shipped back twice for repair. She waited until the 30 day exchange period had passed to complain about it so returning it from the very beginning was out of the question (a sane person would have returned it as soon as possible, but not my sister). Right now it works just fine as far as I can tell, but the last time she sent it back for repair I guess the technician was a little too rough with it and a silver ring right around the lens is bent and jutting out. I know that they'll fix it for free but she's getting tired of paying for shipping every time.

Now here's where my sanity comes in...instead of calling up Canon and complaining to them she harps at me. Every day it's the same thing, I hate this camera, this camera sucks, I wish I never got this camera, etc, etc, etc. If she called up Canon and nagged at them the way she nags at me they would have sent her 10 new cameras by now. I've about had it with her nagging and I'm about to just buy her a brand new camera. A new PowerShot A40 is absolutely out of the question, so I need another alternative.

My price range is $300 - $400 (preferrably closer to $300 if possible) so what are my options? She is not an advanced user and doesn't need a 5megapixel beast, but what she does want is a camera that is easy to use and takes good quality pictures. Personally I think the A40 takes nice pictures, but she doesn't think so. Can anyone help me out here?

The Fujifilm 3800 retails for $399, but you can def. find it for cheaper than that on the net. It's 3 megapixels, and has 6x optical zoom!

BTW - that'll be $399 (sanity doesn't come cheap).

I love my Fuji finepix 1400. My sister (no, she doesn't nag like yours) got one of the latest models and is very happy with it.

I never expected my sanity to be free, that's why I've set a price range. $400 is a tough pill to swallow, but if it buys me peace then so be it.

compudog...

What are the specs of the Fuji Finepix 1400? Is it user-friendly?

I've read that Canon typically has the best image quality for the price range, is this not the case any more?

Don't get caught in that sort of cycle... if you do this for your sister now, think of what will be next. "This computer sucks, this fridge sucks, this house sucks...".

Best thing to do is tell her to suck it up, stop bitching you out, and call Canon.

Tell her to live with it, or trade it in for a new one... then just ignore her.

how old are you, how old is she, and who bought it in the first place?

Hmmm, this thread sort of got off topic, but I guess that's fine considering what forum it's in.

I'm 26, she's 23 and she bought it on my recommendation (I figured with all the positive reviews I couldn't go wrong). She's no leech by any means. If I buy her a camera that will be the end of it. I've got tons of computer parts laying around that put her pc to shame and she never begs for them. The way I see it this will almost be a trade. She'll ship back her camera to get fixed again, then when it comes back I'll keep the A40 and she'll have whatever camera I buy (if I end up going through with the deal....who knows if I get lucky enough I may end up scoring a camera for only a little more than a brand new A40).

Believe me when I say that this won't turn her into a huge leech. We all fend for ourselves in this family when it comes to toys (especially expensive ones). If there's something we want, we get it for ourselves and we don't beg for it.

So back to the question...what camera do you guys recommend?

Oh yeah, I'm working crazy over time at work now and all this extra money has to go somewhere (apart from my IRA) so I figure buying a little sanity should do just fine.
