can you critique this setup? i think that mobo is a gr8 deal for 55.....thats the only thing im not 100% sure on....is that a decent mobo? i tihnk ive heard of biostar before but I am not sure....

also everything has free shipping except the ram which really saves us in price

lol u can get a crappy case for 25 + 16 shipping OR this nice case w/ window for just 46....so shipping sux

It will work if the PS will handle it.

Then again, I'd spring for 10 or 20 more and get a nforce2 board.

Did you get a HSF or use stock? Make sure you get a t-bred not a Palomino.

edit, I see you got BOX.

retail fan

cant go more than 285 and dont wanna downgrade processor....well....what the cheapest decent NF2 board there is with a brand that is decent?

retail fan will be fine its not like they are gunna OC or anything...this is not supposed to be a high-performance machine its supposed to be a machine to play simple games like CS, Madden, WC3 and surf the web fast go on aim etc etc....family computer....so definately no overclock and definately retail fan will be OK

oh one more thing...tell me if i am correct that I need a new case...b/c the 1 he has right now has a K6-2-500 MHZ processor in it and from the looks of it doesnt look like the same setup as my ATX case i just recently bought for myself....do the K62 mobos use ATX?? if this case they have is ATX, then i could save 46 on case and buy a better mobo and processor!

how can i tell?...its some cheesy case they bought from 1 of those pacific coast-like rip-off places

do the following:

1) get OEM athlon 1700 with cheap HSF and arctic silver
2) get a better case, search for antec then get the cheapest one. the raidmax's 60mm rear fan will do you no good
3) get nforce2 if possible. i think a biostar nforce2 400 (or is it ultra 400? probably the new, cheaper, single channel, highly rated by anandtech's nforce2 400) i think it is $50 something after rebate

and don't expect much from those speakers. try and grab one on sale at your local electronics store. altec lansing has some cheap but high qual stuff

good luck

edit: i think the K6 case would be ATX... old pentiums are AT format, but... you'll need to get a new PSU and some fans for the new athlon

btw the raidmax has NO FRONT AND BACK FANS, so if you do decide to get the raidmax it'll knock another $5+ ship for one fan. so yeah, it's not that much expensive to get the antec.

and why $280? geez skip a lunch and dinner on some crackers and you'll save the $20 in no time...

can someone tell me why the 8dra+ is so popular except for it's cheap cheap cheap?

i think the latest 8dra+ (version 3) has some serious problems. (read an article on hardocp) DOA rate is also quite high.

it does anything that other nforce2 boards do, it is a great OCer, and it is cheap

thx for your replies....how can i tell if the case i have now is ATX? Instead of just saying get nforce2 gimme suggestions to stay under my 285 limit

They already told you, when dealing w/ this small amount of money, don't go to taco bell for a week, and save yourself the $20 to get a slightly better mobo.

have extra 20 gig HDD and 16x burner and 48x dvd drive to put in and a floppy like it says in the subject

these people are used to listening to 1 dollar speakers with the right 1 not working so anything is an improvement so these speakers should be fine

OKKKKK so how about this comboo-- instead of Athlon 2000 and KT400 Mobo i get the

Retail 1800 and Cheapest NF2 Mobo (78 w/ 15 rebate)

after we get the rebate back we are looking @ 279 shipped which is even better than before

what will give better performance--- better cpu with kt400 mobo OR worse cpu w/ nforce2 mobo?

sa i said i THINK it's ATX. you will have to find out yourself since nobody will make a trip to your house (probably..)

and i will say nforce2 again. yeah NFORCE2!!!!!!!!!!

as i have said i think biostar have a nforce2 mobo that will fit your budget. search on newegg

Your subject line says that you are building W/O Floppy, Cd, or HDD. That meant you were going to have to boot off a network.

the nforce2 board will be lots lots better, with more functions and supports newer CPU. and you must mean 48X burner and 16X DVD...

and the nforce2 400 is $73 with $15 rebate, making it $58.

I have replaced a couple of K6-2s and they have always been in AT cases. Looking at the motherboard, if all of the PS-2 and serial sockets are ON the motherboard, then it is ATX. If they are all riboon cables connected to the motherboard and then going to slots in the back then it is AT. Even if it's an ATX case, you are going to want a new power supply and the case you picked will look much, much better.
I have built around that case twice now, and it looks really good.
It comes with two fans on the side panel, and if you want to move them around you can.
Buying a couple more fans to put in the front and back isn't that many more dollars, but you are obviously on a tight budget.
For my money, I would go with the 1800+ and nForce2 motherboard because it gives you much better future upgrade options than the KT400 board.

correct me if i am wrong,
if you hit and release the power button and the computer go off, its a AT power supply.
if not, and you move the mouse or press and release the power button again AND it come back on(may be go to sleep under win98) then it is a ATX....

the most easy way for sure is open the case and look inside the cable connection. AT (one single row, with middle 2 lines black) and ATX (2 rows of pins) are different.

Foxconn Super Case Black w/300W PSU $52
EpoX 8RDA+ $79
AMD XP 1800+ Retail $58
Corsair 256MB XMS PC2700 $56
Abit Siluro Ti4200 128M Refurbished $79

total is $324 shipped, $40 more than what you put together, but trust me it is worth it. what you get:

-good looking case with a quality 300W PSU (also I didn't see a powersupply in your build)
-lightning fast / quality nf2 mobo with firewire/onboard sound
-great processor, runs at 1.53 GHz default. you will also very likely receive a Tbred B core, thereby allowing very high overclocks. with a B core and the Corsair RAM, 12x166 = 2GHz at default vcore is a given.
-some of the best memory you can get (dont skimp on good memory), will run at 5-2-2-2 speeds (the fastest mem speeds you can get)
-great video card that will far outperform the 9100 (which is essentially a 8500LE)
-a nice newegg shirt or hat and a really nice newegg pen 🙂

act fast on this though, dont know how long that ti4200 refurb will last. for $40 more you will get a super fast computer, although i didn't select any speakers. either get some quality speakers (z-340s at the very least) or don't get speakers at all. crappy speakers aren't worth paying for, just tell your friend to use some headphones till he can afford better speakers.

oh also, do NOT be afraid to overclock if you get a B core. you will be able to get great overclocks at DEFAULT voltage (meaning there will be NO harm to the processor).
