Help me build a server

I am getting board with my aging system and am wanting to build another one. I don't really have the funds to build a complete system, so I am entertaining the thought of building a computer than can act as my dedicated server. This would be mainly for online gaming, so I could host and leave the server running.

What would be the cheapest way to make a small capable server just for the purpose of hosting online games, linking two computers together for gaming, and to run only as a dedicted server? Would I need a video card at all (besides the one in the motherboard)?

What would be the bare essentials to complete this project, and what would be a good lag free setup?

Let me know if you guys have any suggestions.

ah.. for a gaming server, a good mid level computer would do. the main idea is stability and really quiet.
