Help me build a Sandy Bridge...

Ok, I did like you guys said and held off my new build until Sandy Bridge comes out...

I want a kick ass gaming rig, will buy parts from NewEgg, and am an Nvidia Fan boy (from the US)...

If I would POSSIBLY go dual GPU in the future, want an SDD for OS and gaming, and have an $1100 to $1500 budget, what should I get...?

I apologize to anyone who finds this thread NEWB AND NOVICE but it's been over three years since I built a PC so I just want to do it right...

For all who will make suggestions...THANKS!

It isn't out yet. Come back in a week and half to two weeks. Not only do we not have exact street pricing, we don't know what the good motherboards are going to be since there has been no reviews and few product leaks (no official announcements).

You should get more budget, unless you put gaming on a spindle drive.

i5-2500K,($215) GOOD motherboard, ($200) 4 Gb DDR3 RAM, ($60) GOOD video card, ($200) and ~128 Gb SSD ($250 will set you back somewhere about $950 according to the estimates.
Can you do this cheaper? Yes...cheaper mobo, (the cheapest I saw was about $150) smaller SSD, (about $140) and of course, cheaper video card.

Hi,

Jumping to the thread 'cause i'm in the process of going Asus P7P55D-E <something> with i5 760 and GTX 460 1Gb.

Will the Sandy Bridge be much more €€€ than the system i'm looking into?

I mean mobo for sandy, the sandy itself and probably the memory extra €€€?

I'm looking into mobo+i5-760+4gb-ddr3 for about 400€.

Thanks

The Sandy Bridge CPUs should retail at the same prices as previous CPUs.

US price for a Core i5 2500 will be $200, not sure if that's the unlocked "k" model or not.

What parts do you currently have? What parts will you need? Monitors, Case, PSU, DVD drive, Keyboard & mouse recycled from previous builds save a lot of cash. That's not counting a hardrive & OS install as wel.

The last reports I've seen say the i5-2500K should sell for about $215, only a couple of $$ more than the i5-760. Motherboards will be a few $$ more than the current 1156 boards, but cheaper than the 1366 boards. RAM should be DDR3, so just price what you want for that.

In the various Sandy Bridge threads, (probably in the CPU forum) there are links to the various pricing estimates for CPU and motherboards.

I just built an i5-760 rig. I kind of wish I'd waited to order my parts, but since I did, "she who's the keeper of the va-jay-jay" got pissy when I wanted to return them. "Why do you always want to return gifts I buy for you?" 😛
(even though I had ordered them myself) <shrug> (yes, after 35 years of marriage, I'm PW'd) 😳
This rig is still miles faster than the P4 3.06 it's replacing.

GOOD video card, ($200)

Uh...

At this time for "good" I would aim $300+ for a GTX 570 or Radeon 6950 or higher.

$200 cards are merely mid-range.

.

No. As of now you may as well wait (unless you want overclocking with cheaper CPUs).

D@mn!

I was almost buying my i5 760 system ... now you guys come and say ... "hold your horses ...", and wave a better CPU at basically the same price, in a few weeks down the line ... :hmm:

And now what? Am I suppose to wait? You just think that by saying that you expect me to wait for it to appear? Uhm? Do you?

Well ... I'm tempted do really wait for it ... :awe:

I want to buy mobo+CPU+4Gb+possiblePSU ... and I'm expecting it to be between 600€-700€.

Is there any good preview articles about Sandy Bridge and mobos to come with it around?

I just want what everyone else wants ... to get the best from the budget 🙂

Thanks

with all the 5870 deals right now, for 2-250 you can get pretty high end, as I wouldnt call a 5870 mid tier.

as long as you dont mind rebates!

I wouldnt call a 5870 mid tier.

I certainly would... I mean, 570/ 6950 are high mid right now, then 480, 580, 5970, and 6970 being at the high end. There is no such thing as a "good deal" on a graphics card really. Sure, you might get $50 off, but as far as retail price goes $250 for a 5870/ 470 would be right in line with performance.

Agree totally.

THIS is what I was looking for...THANKS!

Keep in mind that if you wanted to SLI the GTX 570s (dumb idea unless you have a 30" or 120Hz panel) that you'd need an 850W PSU or so.

Fixed!

AnandTech (you know, the site, not the forums) has some preview articles on the CPU but no straight benchmarks.

No real site has motherboard reviews yet. You gotta wait another 1-1½ weeks.

Agree totally.

Yeah I think ONE 570 will be fine for me...

I would consider a 580 but have been reading about people having driver issues...

yeah thats a valid point. I guess to me its stil high end because there isnt much it wont do at 1920x1200 which is the max most people tend to game at.

of course, my next machine is going to have two of them so wtf do I know about overkill.....

I definitely agree that $200 isn't going to buy a top-tier, best in class video card, but it WILL buy a "good" video card. The OP says he's willing to spend $300 for video...that gives him LOTS of options for good-to-very good video cards...yet still won't buy a "top of the list" card.

(I remember when $200 was over-the-top expensive for video...I bought a Monster VoodooII add-on card for about $200 when they first came out...everyone thought I was crazy!)

I would consider a 580 but have been reading about people having driver issues...

I'm sure it will pass if that is true. For about 2 months after purchase my Gigabyte 470 wouldn't accept new drivers (Tried 3-5 times, wouldn't get past windows loading screen) but it did accept the most recent 260.99. I was going to send it back over holiday break from school, but I tried updating the driver again and BAM! works a lot better.
