From what I have seen from the transition from the 6x00 series to the 7x00 series, it seems like a dumb idea to get an SLI board to futureproof.

What's somebody with a 6800gt or 6800ultra and an SLI board going to do now? Buy another one or sell their current one and get a 7800gt/7800gtx?

for the core parts not more then $1000.00 US.
OK. Approximate prices below.

$145 WinXP Professional OEM license (your HP's license is only valid for your HP's hardware).*

$315 Athlon64 X2 3800+ dual-core, retail-boxed

$180 2 x 1GB PC3200 memory modules of some sort

$110 Asus A8N-E motherboard

$55 Fortron AX450-PN 400W PSU (450W peak)

$185 eVGA 6800GS video card

$65 Antec SLK3000-B case. You will need a new case unless you want to buy a microATX motherboard instead of full-sized ATX, because your HP is a microATX chassis. This is a good case for a good price, and comes with a 120mm exhaust fan. The case in my newbie guide is a variant of this same case.

How's that look? I have the case, the A8N-E, the X2 3800+ and 2 x 1GB of Crucial PC3200 in my work rig, very smooth under heavy load. The Fortron PSUs have earned a good reputation, I wouldn't suggest just any ho-hum 400W unit. If the A8N-E's fan bugs you, you can get a Swiftec MCX-159CU for it.

* You could also get a 180-day free trial version of WinXP Pro x64 Edition (64-bit), it's a free download from Microsoft.com if you want to delay buying a new license for a while. It's a common newbie mistake to say "oh don't worry, I'm just going to pirate it." Don't go trippin' over your own faux pas here.

Great build.

If it's possible to squeeze the extra cash for a 7800GT then do it.

Ok, Im all confused now lol.

I need the best possible CPU, RAM, Video Card, Motherbord, and Power Supply. For $1000.00 or maby a little over if its a better deal or something. Any way I only need these things, every thing else I will take care off.

The parts I linked to come to around $1100 (you might be able to get the price down by shopping around)

Imeasurably, especially when overclocked. Look at the numbers for a 4400X2 you can pretty much be asured you'll get that sort of speed. Tom's hardware does CPU roundups, look there.

Ok, well instead of looking really far down the road when your graphics card is outdated, think in a few months when you scrounge up some more cash. A great sli board is the ASUS a8n32-sli delux. I run an a8n-sli premium (16). The Opterons are by far the best bang for you buck period. Expect 2.7 plus (overclocked of course) dual core out of it. The 165 is what i ordered, 175 looks great, but i dont have that much money. The x2's arent so great for overclocking. They will, but not as much as an opteron. Opterons are also VERY reliable. My friend got a 175 a while ago and he raised it to 3.12 ghz and it didnt even blue screen, just scared the living hell out of him when he looked at the temp. Personally i recomend you to never do that. Also, get a 7800 gt. They are under 300 bucks now, and they are plenty fast. Then get another in 2 months :)
