outpost has 512 stick of corsair ram for 25 after rebate.
should i get 2 of these for $50, or go for the kit for $80? does it make a big difference?

these are my options as of now

Video Card- 6600GT
Motherboard- Chaintech Ultra NF-4
Processor- AMD 3000+
Ram- coarsair value select
Case pick and choose.
Power supply-xclico 450
Hard drive- CHeck hot deals section, they have 40 dollar 160B HDDs.
Adds up to be around 600.

here under $600 if you don't need the dvd burner you can remove it. also you can check out the hot deals forum, there is a a64 3000+ for <$120 OEM and you can throw a cheap heat sink on it and save yourself some more money. and if you game you can bump the video card to a x800xl($250) or 6600gt($160)

I'd go with Foxconn cause the MSI and ECS ones have needless integrated video
Well the prices don't seem to be different, so maybe it doesn't matter too much

i like foxconn for a decent reliable m/b but before you buy you might want to read the manual, as i have a i865pe based foxconn board that is as reliable as you can get, but very limited in the o/c dept, no voltage adj whatsoever.

just out of curiosity, why do you need 64bit support?

for motherboard i vote :
Albatron K8SLi Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
$114

this way when you need to up grade you video Card power you can just buy anothere 6600GT and the board don't cost to much and overclocks well enough

He wants to go with MicroATX...that's all his case supports.

I'd go with the MSI or the Foxconn as well. I'm assuming you aren't planning on overclocking.

without reading the manuals (which you can d/l from their sites) i would say the msi would be a better o/cer. i have used foxconn m/b in the past and although very reliable, there were no voltage adjs at all. this may have changed, but msi is known to be more of a enthusiast board where foxconnn seems to be more of a oem type board. if i were you i would go read the manuals from their sites 🙂

should i get 2 of these for $50, or go for the kit for $80? does it make a big difference?

Socket 754 only uses single channel RAM, so there's no benefit to getting a pair, or a kit with a "matched pair." Since you want 1 GB, I'd say go with the two sticks for $50. If you could find a 1 GB stick for less than $100 I'd say get that.

He's getting a Venice, which is 939. Get the two for 50 is say.

Oh, I thought I read that he was going with 754. My mistake. Two is definately better than one then. 🙂

plus you are talking about two different chipsets - the nf4 or the radeon xpress200 - read the benches on these...

How's this for a first post, eh?

Now, I'm not an authority on anything (I had several friends look over these pieces for me to make sure nothing clashed; I'm still unsure if everything is perfect), but this is what I'll be building once everything arrives in a few days:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3000BPBOX - Retail ($146.00)
Mobo: CHAINTECH VNF4/Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail ($86.00)
Graphics: AOpen GF6600 DV128 PCIE Geforce 6600 128MB DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail ($105.00)
RAM: CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model VS512MB400 - Retail (x2, $81.98)
Case: Linkworld 435-10 C2228 Black & Silver Steel/Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 430W Power Supply - Retail ($24.99)
OS: XP Home, with SP2 ($88.95)
Optical: NEC Black IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3520A-KIT-BLU - Retail ($47.99)

And that totaled out to be $618.04 after shipping, and I still need to pick up a harddrive. It's not the best system in the world, but it'll get the job done I think. I probably could've saved some money by shopping around instead of buying everything from Newegg (save for the harddrive), but mneh. The power supply that comes with the case is probably going to suck as far as noise is concerned, but I'm willing to grab another one if that's the case.

I probably should've went for the 6600GT, too, but that would've been an extra $50+. Nobody I've talked to, though, can vouch for AOpen's quality. We'll see how things go.

[Edit:] Forgot to add, this is also for college. I don't do any hardcore gaming, but I do play some fairly graphics intensive games from time to time.

this looks good for what you are going to do with it and the p/s should not have a problem with your current setup, but if you start to o/c or change gpus, get a nice enermax, fortron, ocz or antec p/s 🙂 .

for a hdd you might want to pick up one of the hitachi sataII hdds from newegg - the 80GB version for ~$60, good buy for a fast hdd.

Seagate 80gb SATA for $62 at newegg
