Help me beat dell's $699 puter for a friend.

A friend of mine has 700 bucks to blow on a new computer. Oh yeah, and they want it all in black (if humanly possible). they arent going to play games with it. just surf the net and email.

so what do you say? Is it at all possible?

she's a girl. she doesn't care about performance. As I said, she only uses the computer to surf the net and email. All she wants is a black computer for no more than $700. It has to be a full computer too. with monitor, keyboard and mouse, speakers...

everything else is up to you. Remember that the priority is on the looks! I know it's hard to swallow but you CAN do it

I can't seem to find the $699 computer she saw on tv in dell's website. So THIS IS WHAT I PROPOSE YOU TO BEAT

seriously... i think u should just tell her to get the dell. when it comes to bargain basement (mixed with vanity)... some of those dell deals are really good... especially once u factor in the cost of software. plus u get at least a one year warranty from them. a lot of the OEM stuff u buy only comes with like a 30 day warranty.

Did you guys actually see the specs on the dell that was being ordered. It has a 1.8 ghz Celeron (castrated P4 with 128megs of cache memory) with 128megs of PC133 memory using onboard everything, a 20 gig hard drive and a CDROM. At least thats the lowest version of this PC. Running Windows XP this would run like crap.

I wouldn't recommend that Dell. I hate the new Celeron, it is a waste of silicon.

John's recommendation needs speakers and keyboard/mouse, but could run circles around the Dell machine.

If you really want to help her build a PC, take her to a website.....Newegg, for example. Let her order all the parts you recommend herself.
Not only you can impress her w/ your knowledge but also avoid the possible "problem" in the future.

Get an 845G for intel or nforce for ati. Since they have pretty much everything on-board. You won't need to buy a sound card or video card. Since your friends just going to surfing the net. Plus some also has built in ethernet.

anyway, it appears she is looking for two things... vanity & low price. the dell seems to offer both. dude... just configure this and then go to office depot for this, and you'll both be happy. and less time playing lego with pc part and more time playing with... ehh... u know.

steven's pick is alright. except, they skim on the mouse and give u a teeny tiny 15" monitor i did a custom config, and u can upgrade from the reg cd-rom to 24x cdrw for free. also, upgrading to a 17" monitor and an intellimouse is minimal. check out my config

Talk to the rep on a phone??? You must've gotten a lucky one. One of the reps for me actually gave a price HIGHER than the one stated on the website.

4500s looks cool though, but i'd get at least 256MB of ram, 128MB is too slow for winXP.
