So my friends laptop took a dive and XP wouldnt boot up. He didnt remember his admin password, so I couldnt repair windows. He has important pics he wants to get out of his My pictures folder. So I got him an external hard drive enclosure and hooked it up, but I still cannot access the folder because it is under his My Documents. I also cant drag it to another folder. Anyone have any ideas?
 
This happens when you setup the administrator password on your operating system and it locks when you are backing up the files from other PC without the proper privilege to access.

Make sure you are using lower OS for backing up the files which external HD hardwired to backup PC.

Also try to modify the folder name before backing up the files.

There are few softwares which will allow you to boot from dos and let you modify folder name from command prompt!
 
Sure thing. Unless he encrypted the files, this should work. You need to take "ownership" of the folder.

First of all, what version of Windows are you using on the rescue system? Is it WinXP Pro, WinXP Home, or Win2000?

Ok.

1) open My Computer.

2) Click View > Folder Options > View tab. Scroll down to the bottom and uncheck Simple File Sharing. Alternatively, you can reboot into Safe Mode, if you want to keep Simple File Sharing enabled.

3) Now go to the drive where you can't get into the folder you want. Right-click it (the folder, not the whole drive), choose Sharing and security, then switch to the Security tab and click the Advanced button.

4) Now you should see a second panel titled Advanced Security Settings for <foldername>. It has four tabs. Click the Owner tab, and grant Ownership to the user account you're logged on with right now. Put a checkmark in the box for the subfolders & etc.


Now you should be able to get in there. Any good?
