Help..low PPD with Core i7

Hi all,

I just started folding yesterday ( see sig for rig), and I'm getting only 840PPD total with 4 logical cores ( 2 hyperthreaded physical cores). I read the foldingforum and a even a Phenom can get 2k PPD.
I'm running 4 uniprocessor clients as the SMP client wouldn't work on my machine, and a GPU client ( running on a different processor than the 4 CPU clients). These are my WUs:

3x 4451 (Run 362, Clone 1, Gen 9) - why did I get 3 identical WUs? ( 225 credits)
1x 4462 (Run 73, Clone 1, Gen 6) ( 225 credits)
1x 5749 ( running on GPU) - 511 credits

If I remove the processor affinity adjustment in taskmgr the PPD for each project goes up to ~320 ( 1280 total, still lower than a Phenom) - that's to be expected since all 4 physical cores are used.

My GPU client is doing fine at 5.5k PPD for this project which is slightly slower than average, but I'm using old drivers so yeah...

What settings am I missing, or is this a normal PPD for a project with 225 credits?

TIA

Any reason you're only using 2 cores? What percentage of a core is your GPU client using?

What sort of error did the SMP give?

Did you give each client a different machine ID?

The PPD for the CPU client can vary; I think that's normal for that WU.

Yep, I need the other 2 cores to watch Blu-Ray 🙂

It was some form of I/O error.. can't remember now ( the FAH cores will just shut down). Will try to reproduce it.

Yep, each has its own machine ID.

The Uniprocessor client in not a "High Performance" client.

The various "High Performance" clients gets differing "bonus" points (in theory) according to how much computer resources they need and/or use.

A low end Pentium III can finish Uniprocessor client WUs before the deadline and gets <20 ppd

My old dual Xeon 1.6 @ 2.5 can finish SMP WUs with 30 percent of time to deadline remaining and get about 460 ppd on p2665.

The SMP client can be tricky to set up. Let us help you figure out what went wrong. The guys here have been through it all many times and will offer great help!

Yeah. Tell us the error for SMP. Did you run install.bat first? Because you could run the SMP client with -smp 4 -advmethods for a good amount of PPD.

Thanks people.

I ran install.bat via cmd ( followed the instructions on the site), the two lines appeared - all good.

Next, I typed fah -configonly, followed the instructions as well ( apart from username and team, I left all of them at default), and suddenly, before I can even enter advance config, the client crashed ( a standard windows popup window appears saying the program has stopped working).

Tried re-installing the whole thing, didn't work either.

Any ideas?

Try installing it in a non-Program Files directory.

yeah, I installed it in a different partition, didn't work either.

EDIT: guess what, these clients need a passphrase to work. All good now, 4 logical cores ( 2 physical+ 2 hyperthreaded) giving 2.1k ppd. Is this to be expected?
