installed mandrake 9, running the gnome interface

Downloaded gaim, not sure how to install, read the install.im file

so I ran ./configure
it started running then died with the following
checking for glib-config... no
checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.5... no
*** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found
*** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to glib-config.
configure: error:
*** GLib is required to build Gaim; please make sure you have the GLib
*** development headers installed. The latest version of GLib is
*** always available at http://www.gtk.org/.

so i downloaded glib
tried a ./configure
which of course referenced me to another package i needed
checking for pkg-config... no
configure: error: *** pkg-config not found. See http://www.freedesktop.org/software/pkgconfig/

any help? should I just keep following the breadcrumbs, how do i actually install something beyond ./configure

thx

Wheer possible pick .RPM packages instead. They are like .EXE and don't need to be configured.

Also, GAIM comes in default. I did a full install of Mandrake 9 on my pc (sans apache, ftp server, etc.) and It came
