Help ! Linksys /cable modem

grrr... I have two rigs

One running Win2k using a netmate usb ethernet cable
hooked up to a Linksys 1 port router and 8 port switch

second rig running Win98 using a netgear nic

Both rigs are configured with TCP/IP,they are in the same work group and can see each other but only the Win2k rig can access
the web.

I thought one advantage of the router is that all I need is one nic for each rig ?

I've read the other threads here but to no avail, please help I'm about to rip my hair out here 🙂

Jean,

The above runs from where to where? Is your cable modem USB? What is plugged in to the WAN port on the Linksys? The USB/ethernet converter cable?

In order for the Linksys to function, you have to plug the cable modem directly in to the WAN port. It cannot travel thru a system first.

The cable modem is connected to the WAN port on the linksys
the switch is connected to the LAN port on the Linksys

The ethernet end of usb nic is connected to a port on the switch, as is the nic for the other computer ...

poontos,

Yes the Win98 rig has an IP.I can successfully ping the Win2k rig and vice versa, grrr. I'm looking at both rigs in my workgroup right now but when I try to access the web on the Win98 rig I get the error message that Iexplore has performed and illegal operation... this is making me seriously crazy

Something's wrong with your browser than.

What error are you getting? "Page cannot be displayed"?

"lexplore has performed an illegal operation is the error message" I'm getting

Jeezz... re-install Internet Explorer or get the latest version (5.5 SP1).

Your browser is busted. 😉

Poontos,

Guess I forgot the KISS concept eh ? A reinstall of IE5 and all is good.Am browsing the web with the Win98 rig now.LOL, at least I had my network installed and configured correctly 🙂
Thanks to you and Russ for your help !
