So last Monday I broke my thumb and and sprained my ankle. It was an awesome game of ultimate. I went to the University medical center, and they put me in a boot and a fiberglass splint. My two week checkup is coming up and I want a idea if i can become more mobile/dextrous. From my hand xray i could see my thumb's metacarpal is fractured. From my doctor's incredible painful probings I found out my deltoid ligament, anterior talofibular ligament, and posterior talofibular ligament were strained... or rather he said he felt 3 bad ligaments, and the bruising isn't where the calcaneofibular ligament is(?). So anyone want to cheer me up and tell me I'll be out of these injuries(at least one) come monday?

In two weeks, you won't be done with any of these injuries. It takes much longer for the body to heal and to recover from injuries like these (especially broken bones and ligament/tendon damage). You need to take it easy and listen exactly to what your doctor says. Maybe see if he can recommend physical therapy for your ankle so you can at least start crawling to better health. Sorry to hear about your situation, but you're not gonna be well quite yet. There's still work to be done.

CRAP... well I guess its good I know the Physical Therapy department on campus.

I can't believe how useless my hand is. This might not be the best news but it still helps.

Wow, this isn't the first time I have heard of someone getting seriously injured from playing ultimate frisbee. By serious I mean injured to the extent that it impacts your daily activities and/or prevents you from being as active as you like.

Is the game really that dangerous? I've never played before. Some friends invited me this weekend, but if there's a good chance of this happening, maybe I'll pass.

I'd die if I couldn't make it to the gym ;)

It's a no contact run/throw/catch game. It takes a really competitive spirit to make it into the intense game that it often is ;)

I wouldn't say ultimate is dangerous, but it requires a great deal of athleticism and endurance and puts all sorts of wear and tear on your body. Most injuries occur when two or more players both go up for a disc or when players lay out to either knock a disc down or catch it. I've seen a guy blow out his ACL just landing awkwardly after being in the air and I saw a guy at Canadian Nationals puncture a lung laying out into a lawn chair (obviously, he didn't see the chair).

I've never really suffered any serious injuries and I've played for about seven years. The worst was dislocating my shoulder. That sucked.
