Ok. I have a huge problem. I am building a PC for a friend of mine, and i think i broke the CPU.

System specs
AMD XP 2600+ -RETAIL
ABIT NF7-SG
512 gig ram.
80gig SATA HD
Pioneer DVR-108

Heres what happend, the Hardware install was going great, till I decided to put the retail HeatSink on. This is the first retail heatsink from AMD that i have seen with a lil Green tab on it.. could not get a Flathead screwdriver to fit in it.. so i had to struggle a LOT with it. It slipped off a few times.. my heart stopped.. i thought i might have crushed the cpu core or something.

Time to install OS, this was last night. It worked fine. Got OS up and running. Turned off computer, went to bed VERY happy that CPU was working. Came back home from work tonight, tried to boot up. I got to the windows screen, then computer decided to hang. So i rebooted, now I just get a black screen after the bios screen. I went into the bios.. CPU said 19xx processor speed.. ok good.. but FSB was at 100.. wtf. Shouldnt it be 333 for the 2600+. I only had the option of 100-200 fsp. So i rebooted.. now processor speed says 11xx. Woah.. thats not right.

So, does this sound like the processor busted? Could it be that after the first initial boot up of the processor, once it cooled down over night it just was too much stress for the maybe damaged cpu?

And since when did HeatSinks start having green little tabs on them? Do i need to buy a special tool?

I have been building computer's for 10 years now.. built about 20. This is my first one that I can not find the problem to. I have done all the normal testing.. pulling out each component... trying to reboot... starting over from scratch..

I only have one test left to perform.. remove sata HD and try regular. But it was working fine yeserday. I did not even have to install special drivers to get the sata working with this mobo.

BTW: I can not even boot up from the CD-ROM, like I could last night. And it is not a heat issue. Mobo reports CPU is between 34-39C depending on how long its been on. Sigh.

Should I order a new 2600+ XP and eat the cost? If so which heat sink should I get? Does not have to be great, just easy to get on and cool enough not to fry CPU :)

HELllllllllllllllllllp me ! :)

fsb of 333 = 166 x 2

dont forget that the system runs off ddr, meaning double data rate = 2 x single frequency. so your answer is to choose 166mhz.

Sigh. I MAY have gotten it working. The stupid BIOS decided that it should boot from the HD before the CD. So i changed that and i can boot from the CD. So maybe i should have installed the SATA drivers from the mobo cd first. But we will see, im still expecting it to crash and the CPU to die on me.

Will keep you updated. In the meantime.. still shout out solutions.. and recommend a good Heatsink.. I dont think I will EVER buy retail Heatsink again. That new tab on there... its 100x harder to install then any i have done before.

If your getting into the bios ,thats good sign. You may want to set to default multiplier and fsb manually. One of my chips will not boot if the multiplier is not set to 9(default) Have you tried setting bios defaults or performance defaults? Try swapping the ram to another slot and try resetting the cmos jumper.

Got it working. I had to reinstall windows. I'm not quite sure if the system is stable. I'll find out by playing with it for a few days.

Thanks for the help guys. I was freaking out and was not thinking straight about the 166 x 2 multipler.
