I've got a Duron 700@800 on an Epox 8KTA+ (128MB Micron PC-133, 20gig Maxtor 5400rpm, 32X CD, HP burner, 56k modem, Linksys NIC, onboard sound, Win 98FE, VIA 4.29 4-in-1 drivers).

Everything was working fine this morning when I had a problem with ZoneAlarm not responding. I rebooted the computer and all of a sudden Windows can't see either my CDROM or CD writer. I check in Device Manager and sure enough, under Hard Disk Controllers, there's a yellow exclamation point next to Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo). I don't know what happened. One minute it was working, the next gone. The cable is firmly attached. I've rebooted several times.

Where do I go from here?

remove it from device manager and when you reboot let windows re-detect it, also install the latest 4-in1 drivers and make sure you have the Via busmaster controller set to both IDE channels enabled.

Yeah, and if that doesn't work, then toss it out the windo' ;) .. im joking, Rifter will get the joke..

Seriously, as long as the devices appear in the bios you are fine...its the OS, if they don't appear in the bios.. then worry.. one other possibility, it could be the power coupling to the two devices.. I have had that heppen before.. one set of coupling (on the same strand) went out.. switch it with another and everything is back...
