Help joining WinXP to a Win2k domain

Hey Everyone,

For the life of me, I can not get my WinXP machine to join my Win2k domain. I've got Win2k Advanced Server running an Active Directory domain, and a laptop running WinXP Pro. Both systems are currently hooked up to a campus network, assigning both machines IPs by DHCP. Network settings are identical for each. I've added and activated users in the Active Directory, and added the name of the WinXP machine to the computers. From WinXP, I can see and browse the computer running the server, but can not join the domain!

Any suggestions to try? From some things I've seen, it seems as if there needs to be some very specific DNS things on the client. Also, when I try to join, it asks for a username of a user authorized to join the domain. Is there a special way to do this? Is the user it wants on the domain or the client? And is it specified like DOMAIN\user or just user?

Finally, where are the profiles of the domain users? I want to be able to log onto the domain from any PC on the network and be running my profile? Do I need to specify the path, or does it automatically have a default path somewhere?

I know this all may be a lot to ask for a whole reply for, but I'd love to find some resources for Win2k domains and whatnot, so links as well as reponses are more than welcome.

THanx in advance,
Jazzman

This is all from memory, so bear with me... On your XP box, right click "my computer" then select properties. There should be a network identification tab, select that. There should be an option for a domain somewhere in that tab, select it. You can't browse for a domain like in 2k, but you can search for one. There should be an advanced button, select that, and then you should see the search button. It's something to that effect, I'll look at an XP box at work tomorrow if you still need help.

Thanx OmegaCode. What I was mostly looking for is the details of joining a domin. I have full admin access to both the domain and the XP box. This is just a little setup I have running in my apartment. Currently, I can access it, and it prompts for a user authorized to join. From here is where I get errors. From as much as I can tell thus far, I should have a user set up on the domain, with more than ample permisions to join, and get errors like "user or password invalid" or "server cannot perform this operation at this time".

Do I need to have a local user with the same username/pass on the client XP box?

Thanx,
Jazzman

on your server box you need to go to the properties of the TCP/IP protocol on the connection and make sure it is accepting the address that the DHCP is sending it, b/c by default windows gives it a specific IP (a reboot may be in order at this time). when you try and join you do not need to prefix the username with the domain. In order to load the same user profile on each machine you log onto in your network you'll need to set that account to use Roaming Profiles. read HERE to learn how to set up roaming profiles.

oh... and no your username that you are trying to log onto the domain does not need to correspond in any way with any local usernames that you have previously used to log on locally.

I think I know what your problem is... When it asks you for authentication, you enter in the name of a local admin acct on the server i.e. the local Administrator to the server.
