Even if it isnt expressly forbidden it is likley forbidden in the catch all academic dishonesty clause in your schools rules and regulations for students.

What it boils down to is:

1) Check the school handbook. If that does not mention it then
2) Contact the prof

What about reusing entire essays for college apps with the school names changed?

The citation would be: "My essay from my UCLA app"

Nothing wrong with that. No need to cite IMO.

It's called self-plagiarism, and it definitely can be considered academic dishonesty. Here's an idea - ask the professor if he would allow it. Some will.

i've had a professor tell me the same before.. self-plagiarism is as punishable as any other plagiarism

hmm i did that once. had a 6-7 page paper in one class. a year later in a different class had to write a 12-16 page paper on the same subject. i still had all my notes and stuff from the original. so i just updated it and added a few more pages.

If you wouldn't do it in front of your significant other, it's considered cheating!

...oh, wait. Wrong thread.

That's my thinking too. The professor wants to know what's in the minds of his students. Is it really relevant if useful information was already present?
I've reused previous math assignments often. Very often in fact. I'm sure I've integrated the same equation several times on numerous occasions.

If I do a report on Tesla Coils, and then later on use parts of it, should it really matter? It's still my words, and my knowledge. I'm sure if I asked myself for permission, I'd probably be willing to let me use it without paying me royalties. ;)

I had a similar situation this semester. I told the prof, and gave them a copy of the old essay. They said it was fine, so I doubled the length of it and went further in depth. Got my grade today, an AB. I'm quite happy with it.

Its cheating because he didn't do the clearly pointless busy work required by the redundant assignment that clearly will offer him no educational value.
