hey guys, my friends computer was so slow he had a ton of spyware on it so i downloaded adaware, ran it, had it delete a ton of stuff, then i went to msconfig and unchecked everything. when i restarted the computer the internet wasnt working on it. but he has another computer in his house hooked up to the same router and it had internet, so it was just that computer. i went back and checked everything in msconfig and restarted the comp but its still not working. i want to get this fixed because his dad needs the computer for some business stuff and i told him i could probably get it fixed today. please help me guys!

You're gonna have to more than likely reformat and reinstall. Or at the very least, reinstall the OS

check ipconfig. is it obtaining an ip address. try releaseing and renewing.

if that doesn't work go in to control panel and try to uninstall, yes uninstall internet explorer.

it'll prompt up a menu that will allow you to do a fresh reinstall of Internet explorer.

see if that works.

good luck.

to reinstall the nic i need the cd with the drivers on it right? i dont even think he has that, his comps a dell. i had checked ipconfig and it was infact getting an ip, but i couldnt get to the router settings in IE. i looked at the router instructions and it said to go to 192.168.0.1 so i tried but it never connected to it. how do i release then renew?

I doubt you'll need the driver for the nic. if you're running xp it'll auto recognize it.

Try the device manager first. It's less of a pain. If that doesn't work you can always try removing it.

i've had that same problem before when running adaware to remove spyware.
i think some spyware mess up IE dns search values to redirect to their dll file to track where you're going and then it redirects u to the address u typed in. so when u ran adaware it quaratined/removed that dll.

anyways you can try uninstalling and reinstalling IE. it might fixed it, i never tried that way, I always just reformatted in installed windows all over again.

or u can always run adaware and restore the quaratined files. itll get it working again right away. but the spyware will still be there.

Check the hosts file.

Under Win2k/XP OS's it's found under: C:/(or whatever drive windows is installed to)winnt/system32/drivers/etc

Double click on the "hosts" file and open it with notepad. Look below the text for the line:

127.0.0.1 localhost

Reply back if there is more there below that.

Everything else should be deleted.

You bit off more than you can chew.

If you can't even hit the router/switch then you have an issue with nic/driver.

when you do ipconfig /all make sure your gateway is the same as the ip of the router/switch.

Perhaps you should describe in detail how the pcs are set up to connect to the net.

did you properly apply the CAT5 lube to the ethernet port? I'd check there first.

If you right click on the hosts file and choose "properties", you can uncheck the "read only" option.

Whatever your friend picked up really did a number on that hosts file. It normally isn't read only.

Hrmm.. I'm gonna have to agree with Pepsei in that you really bit off more than you can chew, I mean you're asking how to do basic network stuff and how to unflag a file as read-only.. if you're gonna be fixing someone's PC to be honest, you should know these things already.

That being said... also if you go into command prompt try the following:

ipconfig /release

then followed by:

ipconfig /renew

and see what you get, ideally it should grab the IP from the Router and you should be good to go.
