I have the Soyo SY-K7VME with the on board Lan Port and a Athlon XP 2600, i installed windows XP Professional and i cannot get the internet to work properly. I have a Speedstream 5036 DSL modem and a 4060 USB Dsl Modem(not hooked up at the same time obviously). Here's what happens, i setup up my interent but my LAN connection keeps going dead and my DSL light keeps turning off on the modem and the modem flashes as if it was reset. i went ahead and plugged in my old HP 1.0 GHZ Celeron computer with the same cables, modem, and everything and the internet works fine so it wasnt my provider or my modems. i then decided to hook up my ethernet card from my old computer and install the proper drivers same thing. So i then decide to setup up my USB Modem and the same thing occurs but my connection stays connected a little bit longer. so i've checked the modem, checked the drivers, checked my internet provider(also boggled the minds of there tech department) and i tested all the hardware. i dont know if there is something i need to set on my motherboard or if the motherboard itself is screwed up or even if its some sort of power supply issue. I tried eveything on the soyo tech support page and still no avail. if anyone knows what i can do please let me know? the only other thing connected is my AGP Radeon 9600SE Video Card(if that deos anything)

Did you have a firewall in place before plugging in your fresh WinXP install to your Internet connection? Might want to read here for some tips about worms. There are a couple of online virus checkers there (also linked in my signature), and other resources for you.

Good point, a "naked" net connection is an invitation to be infected. With wired and wifi routers as cheap as $15 after rebate it's silly not to use one. See Hot Deals and/or RossMan's GottaDeal.com.

it is a brand new computer and it happened even before i setup my internet connection. I dont have a firewall device but i did have it activated in the connection settings but i also tried it with it disabled and no difference.

When those connection LEDs go on, it's showtime, whether you set up your Internet connection yet or not. I'd suggest starting from the top: on a clean system with current antivirus software running, download ZoneAlarm and this rollup patch kit and burn them to CD.

Now nuke the questionable system, unplug it from all network devices, leave it that way, and start from the top. Windows Setup, mobo drivers, ZoneAlarm, post-SP1 patch kit. If you have antivirus software, install that and configure it. Now connect to the Internet and immediately update antivirus software, then head to Windows Update and the lot.

Good luck 🙂 If you think it's a hardware-related issue then post the full spec list including the PSU brand and model.

If you did not yet, try putting in a different ethernet card. Try a different ethernet cable. Could be XP has problems with the PPOE for DSL. You might try putting Win98 or something on the new system as a test.
