Ok so I start the computer with the floppy boot disk, navigate to the cdrom, and type setup but all I get is an error saying "packed file is corrupt". Try to boot directly from the cdrom and it freezes up and stops trying to read the cd. Tried 3 different cds and get the same error with all of them. Whats up with that?

At the risk of suggesting the obvious, is the CD's data side clean, and have you tried a different CD-ROM drive? Those are the first things I'd try.

CD is clean if i type dir it will read the dierctory fine. CD works on other computers although I haven't tried to enter the setup on another computer. Also before trying to install the hard drive was pulled from the computer and a new one put in, cdrom worked prior to all this. Checked cables and all other connections and they are fine. Maybe I'll have the energy to try another cdrom tomorrow.

Have you tried copying the files to the hard drive first and then installing? At the worst, you could pull the drive out and put it in another system and do the copying there.

I love that method too, the Windows installaton will then look on the hard drive for the setup files when it needs something from the Win98 CD 😀
