Help installing programs in XP pro

I am running windows XP professional edition. Computer is 1.4 Ghz Athlon, All in wonder radeon 8500, SB Audigy, 640 RAM, Asus DVD ROM E612. I hope this is enough info for the problem, but we'll see...

Anyways, I have several things Ive tried to install (Half Life, the sims, Palm software, just to name a few). I'll insert the cd, the autorun program will run, and I will choose the option to install the program (some have different options). The autorun window will close, and then nothing. If I open task manager, it will have setup.exe and wowexec.exe running, but with no memory usage. I tried installing Half Life on a friends comp, also running XP pro, and it started the installation fine. Whats going on? I cant anyone else with this problem. Can someone help me please? As you can see, its a variety of programs, so I dont know whats going on. Thanks in advance.

Have you been able to install any programs? and if so what have you installed most recently? Either way do you have the most recent updates for XP? I had a problem when I first upgraded to XP where whenever I installed something it would come up saying it couldn?t find the windows installer, I would hit cancel twice and then it would install anyway, that was fixed by reinstalling XP which you might want to do. Any other information you can give us would be helpful in trying to solve your problem.

Okay, heres an update to respond to some of the other posts.

1) I have succesfully installed Office 2000, Madden 2002, SB Audigy software (the extras that came with the card), and some other stuff.
2) I tried reinstalling XP pro, but that didnt solve the problem. I had installed all the updates before the re-install, but I just did another windows update, and installed the critical updates it had. Still the same problem.

I still have no clue what it could be. Could it have something to do with my DVD ROM and CDR drives? ANY clues what this could be caused from. I just kinda need a starting point for research, unless someone has a complete answer (except those seem to be few and far between). Thanks again

if not try to do it manually go to the cd drive in my computer then right click select open then browse for the setup file see if that will work
