I am installing a creative cdrw into a w2k machine and it is only being detected as a regular cdrom. It picks up the correct name and installs drivers but wont recognize it as a burner. I have tried master and slave on both my ide channels and it has not helped. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What do you mean "it won't recognize it as a burner"? Did you install the Nero software and it is not recognizing the burner or are you saying that in Win2k it is shown as a CD ROM?

both windows and my burning software read it as a regular cdrom, although when windows refers to it by name it calls it a cdrw.

Did you install the drivers from the floppy that came with the burner? That solved my problems in W2K back in the day.

It's the burning software that recognizes drives as CDRW. Windows always treats CDRW drives as regular CDROMs. Upgrade Nero or EZ CD if you can. Check http://www.winchan.net/aspi/ to see if that's the cause (though it never solved my CDRW problems in the past).
