edit: Found it. It's Dynasty Warriors 3.

I went to the local ToysRUs tonight near closing and one of the games they had on display was, IMO, really fun. The clerks there were just itching to leave and they didn't really want to go through the effort of finding out the game's title (the display was labeled for Jak & Daxter.. but that wasn't it).
For playstation 2 and it was a third person view. When I played, I played this Chinese general in some period who used a huge staff and swung it around like there was no tomorrow. Foot soldiers came against you en masse and you could tell who the enemy were by their colored uniforms and a health bar above their heads. If you swung and connected at least 5 times in a row, you got some kind of combo bonus and the combo would increase for each swing above 5. There was a "K.O." counter that went up every time you killed a soldier. Every once in a while, some character will say something like "You are the best general we've ever had!", especially if the KO counter hit some multiple of 50. Other times, a message will come up saying some general was in conflict with another army or general and flash their location on the minimap in the upper right.
The 'x' button let you jump a little, the square swung the staff, the triangle did some kind of magical move that hurt the enemies immediately around you, not sure what the circle button did, and the R1 or R2 button brought up a close-up view of the map -- units were in colored, solid circles.
I looked around at the major game sites and I didn't find any pictures that looked like the game, at least not with certainty. Any help?
