Help in finding out CDR speeds

The local suppliers have some noname CDR's which they claims are 16x writable and they want a premium price for these as compared to the other CDR's which I could used in a friends Plextor 16x only upto 12x.

Is there any way to find out if CDR's are made for use at 16x - CDRID does not give this info for CDR's.

I believe you can use any speed CD-Rs for burning at any speed. Although with higher-speed rated CD-Rs, there is usually higher quality involved.

Yucky - Thats what I thought but the last lot of CDR's would not burn over 12x. Obviously not of premium quality. But the supplier mentioned some stuff about better dye quality and newer technology on the CDR's he was trying to sell us - I suppose to justify an increase in the price.
