It may be that I am using this XP Athlon on an older MSI board (KT7 Pro2) and need to go for a newer board. It works at 100 FSB just fine -but I always have to reboot it twice at the start.
I press the on button - all starts normally. Just as it is getting past the bios, I hold back in the button to stop - wait a few seconds - and then restart.
If I do not use this sequence, it will lock just before it loads Windows. I then will hold button in till it dies, restart - and then choose normal at the safe mode option screen. Almost the same.

Any way to stop the lockup. I am concerned that all this will wear out parts prematurely.

Thanks.
Andrew

I am using PC133 - 256 mg.
I am thinking that I just need to go on and get a new board to fit the CPU better - was going to hold off as long as I could.
Did not have this problem before I went to the new CPU. Had a Duron 650.

Thanks,
Andrew

There's definately something wrong. Either your computer is defective or the motherboard doesn't like it. You can try upping the voltage on the cpu and vdimm to see if it will boot at 133mhz fsb or try flashing to the latest bios.

I will try to up the voltage first.
As I said, this is an non XP board using an XP. It may be that an XP cpu would take a bit more voltage - or even that it is just not being read properly ???
Already downloaded the latest bios.

Thanks for the hints.

Still the same.
I did get a routine that helps. I boot up, wait till it gets past the first screen - and reboot. It then goes all the way to load Windows. At least this way I do not have to turn it on and off.

I am pretty sure that it is the XP running on this older board. I plan to get a new XP board in about 3-4 more months - should fix the problem.

Thanks for the help.

Have you tried flashing your board's bios to a newer version, one that supports the xp?

I did the latest bios when I got this XP cpu. I knew when I did it that this board was not intended to support XP - even with the new bios. At the time I was not even sure that the cpu would work, but it did.
Thanks for the help. Soon I will get a newer baord. That will probably fix the prob.
