When I change the settings on Internet explorer-5 and click "apply" and "close", that works fine BUT--the next time I look, it is back like it was. :| Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

Am I the only one that this happens to? :( If this doesn't happen to other people, do you think re-installing IE-5 would fix it?

bacillus:

When I am in Internet Explorer-5, and click on "tools > internet options > advanced" and then scroll down to "search from the address bar > when searching" there are 4 options to choose:

1. Display results, and go to the most likely site.
2. Do not search trom the address bar.
3. Just display the results in the main window.
4. Just go to the most likely site.

Normally there is no option selected. When I select "just go to the most likely site" and then click "apply" and close, I can go back later and look, it will still be changed. :) BUT the first time I type in an address in the address bar and try to go to that web page, it never does. It ALLWAYS goes to Microsoft?s search engine page. I can then go back and look at the options, the settings will be changed back like they were. :| It drives me nuts to type in an address, and have it ALWAYS go to Microsoft?s web site first. There has to be a way to make it "just go to the most likely site" and stay the way I choose. THANKS!!

Well at least I know I am not completely nuts  ! I was beginning to think this had never happened to anyone else! Now, does anyone have a solution for the problem?

I'm not sure I fully understand the problem but could it be that somehow the search engine's webpage has become your homepage?
may account for why it always turns up first.
Do you have both inline auto complete checked?

I've seen this one before as well. Make the changes from the Control Panel Internet Options icon, with all IE sessions closed.

It's goofy, I know, but there was a particular combo of Windows 95 and IE5 that would not save the settings if you tried to change them from the Tools pulldown in an IE session. I honestly don't know what the issue was, but when I tried it from the Control Panel icon, it saved my settings; whenever I played with them from the IE session pulldown menus, it ignored them after I closed the session.

I have since upgraded both Windows and IE so I can't tell you exactly what combo had the problem. I think it was early IE5 and Win95 OSR2 without any additional patches.

Thanks for everyones input. I tried to change the settings from the control panel with IE-5 closed, no luck. :( As soon as I opened IE-5, it switched back to the way it was. BTW I am using Win2000. Any other ideas for me to try?

Hmm - Win2K, eh?

Network admins, help us out here - does FOH have to be logged on as an administrator to make permanent changes to the settings in IE? That would be my next guess, since WinNT always seems to be rather picky about that sort of thing.

Thanks for the reply Lady Niniane, I think you are right about being logged in as administrator, but I tried that also, no luck. :(
