HELP!!! I used a Magnetic Screw Driver to Assemble System half-way, Didn't know it was Magnetic!!!!

OverVolt

Lifer
I bought this PC toolkit at Radio Shack, It came with these two screwdirvers, one flat, one phillips.

I had been using the flathead screwdriver to assemble my brand new $3,200 System!!!I even used this magnetic screwdriver to install my TWO WD Raptors, i was going to RAID 0!!!

Please tell me everything will be ok 🙁!!!

I heard of some people using Magnetic screwdrivers with no problem, the screwdrivers wasn't very magnetic, i didn't even notice it cuz i would screw in the screws by hand and, then screw them in with the magnetic screwdriver. As of now i found a new screwdriver to use, i hope assembling the rest isn't in a waste of time!!!

Everything will be fine. I've used magnetic screwdrivers on computers. The only worry would be deleting data on a hard drive. Even if it was powerful enough to affect the platters, it's a new drive.

You're good to go.

Yeah, magnetic screwdrivers are nothing to be afraid of. It's a common misconception. You'd need a magnet several dozen times the strength to affect a hard drive in any way. Don't worry, you're safe.

IF the magnetic field was strong enough to penetrate all the way to the platters and erase and/or corrupt them, the heads would have shattered!

NO magnetic screwdriver has that kind of magnetic field present. About the only thing you could damage is a single floppy disk by pulling the protective cover back and touching the media with the bit.

There are probably stronger magnets in the motors of the CD drives, fans and even the hard drive itself. It is SO much easier in building a PC with a magnetic screwdriver than a non-magnetic one, as you spend 3x as long doing it as you keep dropping screws!

As Wingznut said, probably the only way to do anything to the hard drive with a magnetic screwdriver is to st@b it right in! 😉

Confused

I use them intentionally as I hate losing screws into and under the motherboard.......

I have a one of the magnets off of a military bulk eraser and it is flat awesome in its strength, I imagine it could mess with the hard drive if it came in direct contact, but it will mess with monitors from 3-4 feet away.

Yup, no worries, as mentioed its a common misconception. I've even had magnets on the side of my case before to prove to a friend it won't hurt it unless you get a very strong magnet.

unless you're using ELECTRO-STATIC-DISCHARGE 5000 screwdriver, youll be fine. This one, however, discharges 5000 volts of electricity upon contact 🙂

I've used magnetic screwdrivers many times to screw in hard drives and other stuff, and it hasn't affected the drives one bit, even when they have data on them. 🙂

i always use magnetic screwdrivers when i work on computers. otherwise the little case screws are a total pain. put it in perspective: your fans have a much larger magnetic field than any screwdriver and it doesn't affect anything.

I bought a 40 gig Maxtor about 8 months ago. The installation instructions that were included, in fact, recommended the use of a magnetic screwdriver.

The fact that the screwdriver came in a PC toolkit probably should have been a giveaway that its okay for use on PCs.😀

Nope, all your parts are ruined. Please package them up and ship them to me asap! 😛 PM me for my shipping address 😀

You'll be fine, a magnetic screwdriver isn't going to give you any problems.

Yes, and I must add that in this case damage would have been done even if the screwdriver was not magnetic.

Edit: Don't worry, I've been using magnetic screwdrivers to assemble and do maintanance to PCs for the last 8 years or so, and have yet to damage anything with it. Unless it slips from my hand while I'm installing a HSF 😉

Like everyone is saying your fine don't worry. I always use magnetic screwdrivers. In class we took a magnet from a hard drive and put it on the cabinet. The challenge was to see if anyone could pull it off, no one could.

You bought a toolkit at radio shack? Oh my God! You're gonna die!

I use magnetic screwdrivers all the time, magnetized by a broken speaker on a bookshelf behind the workbench. Nothing dead from it yet. I have accidentally st@bbed parts while using crappy screwdrivers, though, so Wingnutz might not be too far off...I have yet to st@b anything w/ one of the Kliens, though, and my few stabbings didn't hurt the parts (I st@abbed my current mobo while installing the HSF...it slipped, you can still see the streak...but it runs 24/7 🙂).

Edit: I can take f***, for example, why is st@b filtered? Especially since I've only used it on forums in this very context: tools slipping.

I read in ATOT that it was used to mean something else. It eventually got out of hand, and the mods blocked the word.

I have no idea what it meant though.
