My daughter has to submit a science project idea in the next week and I'm stumped. This is tougher than I thought. Every idea I've come up with (which isn't many) doesn't interest her. She'd do it with dolls if it was up to her if you know what I mean. :D

I'd like to get some ideas from you guys. Try to stay away from the electronic fields or computers. I already have to many of those and they are way to involved for a 1st grader.

Remember: She's in 1st grade and she's a girl!

PS: No volcanos, the teacher nipped that idea in the bud. :D

1st Place: "My Uncle Is A Man Named Steve (Not A Monkey)"
Cassidy Turnbull (grade 5) presented her uncle, Steve. She also showed photographs of monkeys and invited fairgoers to note the differences between her uncle and the monkeys. She tried to feed her uncle bananas, but he declined to eat them. Cassidy has conclusively shown that her uncle is no monkey.

I dunno why but this made me LMAO.

I did a volcano back in the day. It was homemade playdough spray painted orange. I like the rusting nail in coke one.

You could also grind up cereal containing iron in a blender and use a magnet to pull the iron out of it. This really works.

2nd Place: "Women Were Designed For Homemaking"
Jonathan Goode (grade 7) applied findings from many fields of science to support his conclusion that God designed women for homemaking: physics shows that women have a lower center of gravity than men, making them more suited to carrying groceries and laundry baskets; biology shows that women were designed to carry un-born babies in their wombs and to feed born babies milk, making them the natural choice for child rearing; social sciences show that the wages for women workers are lower than for normal workers, meaning that they are unable to work as well and thus earn equal pay; and exegetics shows that God created Eve as a companion for Adam, not as a co-worker.

* Puts on flame suit for second time today.

He should have won a Nobel Prize for that.

You could get some fabric swatches that are idetical except for color, and put each of them under a light bulb for a certain amount of time. Put a thermometer under the fabric and see what color absorbs the most energy. It's the closest thing to dolls I could come up with apart from dowsing dolls with various accelerants, igniting, and noting the results.

Just don't use that "lower center of gravity" bit as a pickup line.

Does she go to a private school or something? I didn't get science until grade five.

I'm willing to bet you got a crash course in anatomy before that.

Static electricity?

Explain what that is and demostrate?

Get balloons, blow balloons up, rub on hair, see hair get freaky. Repeat on dolls as a minature human being? Or use live subjects?

LOL! She has an Uncle Steve!

Yes, Catholic school.

That's a good one. Not the doll burning. :p I think I could probably explain to her way she gets hotter wearing black in the sun as apposed to wearing white. I like it.

You could make ice-cream.

I have an ice cream maker. Plus we would get to eat the experiment.

Keep them coming!

try getting 3 different liquids in order to show boyancy of certain objects. I think in 1st grade i put maple sryup on the bottom, water(?) in the middle and cooking oil on the top. Different objects were dropped in and their densities could be seen.

About 5 days or so before the project is due take some very damp (not drenched) paper towels and put them into two glass pie plates. Get some radish seeds (home depot or where ever) and put them on the paper towels. Wrap both with plastic wrap to keep the moisture in, and put one in a bright (but not sunny, that would be too strong) place. Put aluminum foil around the other. IMPORTANT!!!!
The foil MUST block out ALL light, and NO PEEKING. Flashing them for only a second or two will screw them up.

Once the time comes, unwrap the foil and compare the two.

You can do a dry run of course to see if 5 days works. It should, but too long and you get mold.

Some of my favorite was how you can collect gas from waste for fuel, or howto put an egg in a bottle with out breaking it.
