HELP! I need some ideas for a 1st grade science project for my daughter.

My son just did the buoyancy one. He showed the density table for several things (water, olive oil, copper, etc) and then showed what floated and what sank. Then explained how the table helps you predict the outcome. Coolest part...glass with some oil in it... ice floats, then the liquid water sinks as it melts.

1. Make a magnet using a nail, battery and wires (very easy)
2. Potato light
3. Prisms (explain how lights refract etc..)
4. Plate Techtonics (styrofoam on Kryo syrup)
5. Heat absorbstion with colors.. (very easy for kids.. 2 boxes .. 1 with white inside and other with black, cover them with plexy glass on top and shine a light on it and take temp.)

how about an ant farm which has different soils.... do the ants like sand or top soil or pebbles (e.g., fish tank gravel) best?

just curious- how do you make a potatoe light? i happen to have a potatoe in hand right now :)

Here is a link to make Potato clock, I think it can be done with an LED bulb also..
