I am in a rut, I only us my computer for work or the Net, no games. I spent years destroying every mutant in Quake I and II untill 2AM. I tried to love Unreal (not UT) and Halflife (the origional), but always get bored before the shooting started. All the new games are deathmatches, you just run around shooting untill you are killed. Yuck. The effects are great but the game itself is dull. Any new Quake II types out there??? I am getting too much sleep. R

Deus Ex. Combines FPS genre with the RPG genre, and delivers a great story.

Game of the Year 2000 from PCGamer.

For an online game, definitely take a look at Tribes 2. Need a pretty high end system to run it properly though. But its much, much more involved than a simple deathmatch type game.

NOLF is a good single player game if you like slow paced stealth type games. Some get bored waiting around 5 minutes to sneak past some guard. If not, its a really good game for the $12 price. For a faster paced game, Serious Sam is great and Ive seen it as low as ten bucks. Throws more monsters at you than any game Ive ever played. Had like 3500 kills (maybe was more, dont remember) when I finished.

it may have been said before, but look into counterstrike. much more than a simple deathmatch FPS. i'd also second the opinion on tribes 2. yummy gravcycle goodness! :)

I second Deus Ex, Also Undying was pretty awesome too.

When I think of great single player FPS games those 2 come to mind first.

No One Lives Forever adds a new twist to first-person, plus a lot of humor. But I don't think it has much difficulty. Then again, it is hard to go from Quake Half-Life to a more Thief-tempo game like NOLF.
