HELP...I need a Linux Expert!

I have just installed Red Hat 6.2 on an old box. After I completed the install and the system rebooted and I reach the login portion of the OS...the problem is that the screen flickers non-stop and I can't use the keyboard.
Is this a video card? Monitor Issue?
During the install it sensed the wrong video, which one should have I chosen? The correct card or the one sensed by Red Hat?
Help Please...

Which one did you install? I would have gone with the auto-detected card first, then if that didn't work, tried the other card. Its a video driver issue for sure though. What card do you have?

sounds like x isn't configured right. When you get your lilo prompt type 'linux single' and that should let you go to text mode as root. You can then try typing xf86config to attempt to reconfigure X.

I installed the card that wasn't auto-detected. Should I re-install and go with the auto-detected card (which is the wrong card).

I have the Diamond Viper V770...its in the Hardware Compatibilty list.

That's a Riva TnT2 chipset (which is going to be the driver you want). Linux isn't going to list specific cards but rather the chip that powers them.

Yep...that was the video card/chipset it detected. I'll reconfigure, thanks...hope this works.

If nothing else, upgrade to a modern version of linux. 6.2 is what, almost 2 years old now?

I know, but I had a Red Hat 6.2 disk laying around with a bunch of old parts.
I figured I'd try 6.2. Got it to work, so now I'm happy.

Good deal, now patch it up before it gets rooted (hopefully you still have time).

If it has no net access don't worry about getting hacked, but worry about securing the box (pretty much just for the hell of it). I'm assuming you're wanting to use this as a learning experience which means you've got the perfect setup (seperate system you can reinstall when you need to). If you can download stuff on your windows machine and update 6.2 "by hand" then you'll be set to handle any Linux distro you want. Don't be afraid to mess it up.

As MGMorden said, thats a good thing for you. I hope you did not take offence or think that I was calling your knowledge and skills into question. RedHat 6.2 had some nasty holes and I had heard plenty of reports of people getting hacked while downloading patches immediately after their first reboot and connection to the internet.
