i just got a p2-333 machine for free fom work and will be bringing it home today. i currently have 5 computers at home in addition to the two my girlfriend has, and the two my other roommate has. i know i should get rid of at least one of my computers, but i just can't bring myself to do it. my firewall is a p133 and rather old, but i can't bring myself to get rid of the old boy. i chose it as the firewall machine because it runs very quietly and cooly. if i were a normal person ii would have gotten rid of the firewall machinelong ago, but i can't bring myself to do it. crap, i don't knwo waht to do, i'm addicted to these old junkers. while running openbsd for several months now that firewall hasnt crashed or even hiccuped even once and now i repay its loyalty by throwing it away? sniff sniff.......... i dont know

I think ur better off selling all the excess crpa and get a router.. i used to run a pc/firewall.. takes up room, cost more electricity, etc... donate it.. save ur room... i gave away all my old stuff... it's just a waste of room.. :)

I'm the same way, I have a bunch of older stuff laying around. I went with a hardware firewall/router for simplicity, but usually older machines get "demoted" to file serving duty (or something like that). Either that, or I sell them for cheap to someone who has no machine at all.

At least you're actually finding uses for your old computers. I have a few computers that have been scavenged and look pretty bleak now and they're sitting in my closet collecting dust. Hehe I have 386's, 486's, and Pentium/K5's. Noone would take these now cause they're pretty worthless.

Find some person who has little and give your excess computer away. The smile you get pays for it.

Hello, My name is Bill W. Woops! Wrong forum.

While I'm here let me say that you are among friends who know where you are at this point in your life and appreciate your situation. Rather than scatter the chips to the wind you can take the advice of corky-g or forcesho and donate it to someone who is in need, or you can set it in a corner and make an MP3 jukebox out of it. I bought some parts to add to the collection I had in my closet and made a great MP3\File server. No keyboard, mouse or monitor. Just use something like Remote Administrator and you're set. Good luck.

Yeh, it's tough being a hardware junkie and a packrat. Might see if there are any charitable organizations in your area that recycle old boxes to people who can't afford 'em. Do a good deed and get a tax deduction, too.

As long as it's a pentium class machine, somebody somewhere will be really happy to give it a good home- play with the kids, do homework, surfing, email- don't deprive that old box of it's dignity and usefulness in its twilight years- add sniffling, tears as required.

don't donate it unless you need a tax break......i worked for the charities here and believe me you can help someone out better by giving to somebody who can't afford one

charities charge an arm and a leg for these when they get them free

just a suggestion
