On my Vendetta 2 I put one drop on the IHS of the cpu and spread it evenly with an old credit card and it's been working fine ever since.ymmv.

He did just mount it front to back (as opposed to up/down) using some weird convoluted technique where he screwed two of the black Socket 939 brackets TOGETHER and used the pressure in between to hold the clip down, I'll see if I can get him to post a write up with pictures; his temperatures DID drop, even though I swore left and right there wouldn't be enough force holding the heatsink down.

OMG. TWO people to mount a stupid heatsink? BAD mounting design. That's insane. I'd take that back and look at any number of other coolers. That's ridiculous for a socket 939 Opteron. That CPU is a historic overclocker.

i have actually read that guide and found that the "proper method" described there wasnt as effective as manually filling each crack yourself before doing a light spread, unless your thermal compound was very thin and easy to ooze around under the cooler. thicker pastes like AS5 didnt spread well enough when i used the method they described and i almost fried my A64 because the paste didnt spread properly, and i got air bubbles in all the cracks between the pipes and brackets. it IS possible though that my chip didnt actually get hot enough to make the paste spread properly though lol, the a64 single cores ran pretty cool over all. TJMax was rated at 57C on my chip lol

and at the guy above me, the method they used sounds like they werent using the stock mounting bracket (i think, i really cant tell wtf they are doing). i had no problems mounting my Ven2 on my A64 with the stock bracket and it has kept it running between 20c and 40c ever since (low idle to high load), when it was overheating prior with the stock cooler
