Hi all,
I'll be leaving my home and be going to a different country for 3 years. This is urgent and I can't just leave my PCs just yet. I somehow need to access it remotely when I reach the other country. In my home, I have 4 computers which is connected via Ethernet cable to a modem/router with 4 Lan Ports. Unfortunately, our ISP only gives us Dynamic IP.
Just to inform you, If I rate myself from 1 to 10 regarding networking, I might be 3 or less. As much as possible, if you can give me a detailed step by step on how to achieve this, it would be awesome. I also might not understand some terminology that you would say. If you could give me a link for my understanding, it would be great.
However, I did some reading and tests and this is what I've learned and what I can do:
1) I tried using RealVNC, UltraVNC and remote accessing my other computers Locally and it was successful. I getting quite familiar with these open source programs.
2) I haven't tried using the built in Remote Access yet, but please tell me if I should use this instead of the VNCs.
3) I know the basics on networking, like setting up all the computers in local static IP and putting other DNS servers, stuff like that.
I've read some posts already on how to remote access and I noticed that the dates are kinda old. I am wondering if there are new Remote Access techniques out there.
From what I read (understand), I need to create an account at www.dyndns.com to make my dynamic global IP to be Static (or at least make it think like that). Then choose options like VNC, built in remote desktop, or any other retail remote access programs to achieve remote access. My friend told me about logmein, but I haven't read it yet.
My questions are:
1) Do I really need to register at dynDNS.com for starters? I understand I always need to know the global ip of my computer in order to access it but is there a program that bypasses this? Even if it is retail?
2) My grandma told me that when she called HP, the technician asked for her email address and the tech guy sent her a weblink in her email. My grandma clicked that email and the tech guy suddenly had control over my grandmothers PC. Just a weblink? What is that? I was also informed that Verizon does this as well? What the heck is that? That seems to be simple enough for me.
3) I only need to access ONE computer (out of the 4) at home because the other 3 are being used by my bro/sisters. But it would be better if I could access all of them just in case they need troubleshooting help (ofcourse, not networking related .. lol).
4) What do you think is the easiest, fastest, and most secure Step-by-Step procedure in achieving this. It would be best if it was free but If I need to pay to make it easier, I would.
I am planning to create restore disc images with all of the computers using Acronis True Image. I was hoping that if you are going to tell me the programs that I need, I would include it before making a restore disc.
All my computers have WinXP Pro Sp3 (latest update). My computer (the one I need to access) has Windows XP Sp3 / Ubuntu 8.10. When I go to my destination country, I will be buying a laptop and I'm planning to put Windows 7 Beta / Ubuntu (dual) to that. If you think that is a no no, I'll just use Windows XP instead. Please let me know.
Thank you very much and sorry for my poor English.
