Help - How to make sides of pics fade

I would like to make a pic with one side that fades.

Example

I have Photoshop but I don't know how to do it. Can someone help me out?

Set Opacity to like 30%
Create a shaded region using the shader button on the new layer

Maybe he meant the gradient tool.

You could use a layer mask and a few gradients.

Or just a gradient on another layer fading to transparency.

I used to know how to do it there was a decent tutorial on about.com. try there..
