Help, how do I get back into the software engineering field?

I've worked as a software programmer for 10 years, was laid off 2 years ago during a company re-org. During the last 2 years, I was out of the country for a year helping out relatives and the other I was back trying to figure out what to do as I didnt want to work in the software engr field anymore. I had plans on going into starting a small business with a friend but that didnt go through. So now I would like to enter back into the sw engineer field again but I'm not really sure what I need to do to prepare for it? Any advice would be appreciated.
 
Uh, do what I did... put your resume in everywhere. 🙂

Or if you want to move to New York, well let's just say that we need help and I'd happily get your resume fast-tracked.
 
yeah, same with my company in Phila. We are hiring two people a month currently!

But the catch?, you have to know PERL and well.
