Get a bootdisk from bootdisk.com.
Boot up using your floppy drive.
FDISK and format your drive if you haven't already.
Do a SYS C:
Copy over all the files on the floppy to the hard drive.
Put in your CD-ROM drive (with no CD inside).
Your system should now boot up from the hard drive. If not, you did something wrong above.
You should now be able to access your CD-ROM from DOS. If not, your drive may require special drivers.
Install Windows.
Delete all the files you copied from the bootdisk except IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, and COMMAND.COM.

almost done.... bbif with update :D

please update if it worked. i'm having the exact same problem with a Dell Latitude C600 and haven't had any luck. I purchased the external floppy connector so I can boot from the floppy drive with the cd-rom in the drive bay. Still no luck accessing the drive though to begin an install.

I do have a bootable version of win2k which is what i'm trying to install but it refuses to boot to that cd.

I'm starting to think the drive is dead but would appreciate any input regarding the possibility of special drivers being required. The cd drive i'm using is actually a dvd drive. should that run fully compatible at bootup with cd-rom protocols and stuff? or is there something i need to do to be able to boot to that drive? (besides setting the boot sequence in the bios to start with the cd-rom)

incidentally, it is F2 to enter the bios on startup.

i will update soon, still working on it. my version of win98 wouldnt boot. yeah i figured out that fn +F2 was BIOS....so far this seems to work. to copy files to hdd. i use for a:/copy *.* c: and it works. however with win98se it shouldnt need a disk to boot.

btw i also have a external (USB) floppy drive, and its not going to boot off of that ;) tried it.

if i dont update soon will by morning (12:30 EST here )

edit: welcome to the forums :D

:D thanks for the welcome. I was told this is the place to come for the best tech advice. i think i'll stay for the off-topic discussion too.

regarding that external floppy: I'm using the regular internal floppy with a cable that connects it to the parallel port. it's available from dell for $13 +/- and enables booting from the floppy with the cd-rom in the bay. i've had complete success on that front. just trying to get the dvd drive to work. i can change to the cd directory (d:\) but any attempt to read the drive (command: dir) gives me an abort/retry/fail.
