Make sure the CD-Rom drive is bootable via the BIOS, insert OEM Win 98 and reboot 🙂

I forget, is Win98 first edition bootable? I'm pretty sure 98SE is.

First edition iis not, no.
Try Bootdisk.com for a boot disk if necessary.

f2 should do it. try f12 or f11 I guess.

win98 First Edition IS bootable IIRC

Else, you can always try a network install 😀

Is it bootable?

I hope so =\

I fail to see how that proves it's bootable. Legit, yes. Autorun-capable, yes. But bootable? I honestly don't know.

When you boot with the flopp disk, it loads all the utilities onto a ramdrive, so you should be able to take the disk out. I've never had to take a boot disk out, so I can't say 100%... but that should work.
Try the CD first, though, you're not sure what Win98 edition you have (though I'm guessing it's the first, given the copyright on the CD).

Burn a bootable CD-ROM with the 98 boot image on it. Once it boots to a C: prompt, insert the 98 CD and run setup.

WTF, i cant get it to go into the BIOS, and when i put the CD-in there i get " invaild system disk, replace the disk, and then press any key :|

wait, so copy all the files of the boot disk, and burn onto a cd? that should work.....?

If you can't boot from the CD because the BIOS doesn't support it, you could boot from a DOS floppy, copy the system files and CD-ROM drivers to the hard drive, then boot from there.

On my crusty old Toshiba lappy, I hooked the hdd into my main PC with an adapter that lets you hook a 2.5 inch hdd into a normal PC IDE cable. Booted to floppy, fdisked, formatted drive, then started the Win98 install. When I got to the point where Win98 was done copying files and wants to restart, I shut it down and then transfered the drive back to the lappy and let the install finish.

dell bios is sometimes F8

On some of my older ones at work you have to press Delete twice, once to access the system specs screen, twice to see open the BIOS.

Newer ones are F2 if memory serves.

Since you seem to have overlooked my first message...

Get a bootdisk from bootdisk.com.
Boot up using your floppy drive.
FDISK and format your drive if you haven't already.
Do a SYS C:
Copy over all the files on the floppy to the hard drive.
Put in your CD-ROM drive (with no CD inside).
Your system should now boot up from the hard drive. If not, you did something wrong above.
You should now be able to access your CD-ROM from DOS. If not, your drive may require special drivers.
Install Windows.
Delete all the files you copied from the bootdisk except IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, and COMMAND.COM.

Seems like he ignored several users' messages.
