Help... Heat !

ok well got a shuttle SS56G today. Well got it up and running and have had a few random crashes. First thing i thought was heat.... Well downloaded SpeedFan and sure enough, Cpu temps are @ 75-80 c which is way hot (i think).

Any advice on cooling this sucker down? Also i used the thermal compound provided, would better compound help at all ?

Thanks

shuttles are genarly hot, although 80 c is way too hot. Add better compound first, if that doesnt work get a new HS like a XP-90. Last thing I can tell u is switch it to an full tower

depends on what kind of compound you're putting into it. arctic silver 5 is what most people use, but im guessing you put too much/too little on the thing and should try to clean it and re-apply. remember that it should be paper thin covering only the heatspreader of the core. then, run some prime95 overnight to do a burn-in, some compounds show results after a certain amount of hours of usage.

ok well then i think i put on too much compound on.... i didnt cake it on but i definatly put on more than a "paper thin" amount... Would an XP-90 even fit in a shuttle case ?

I had the bios set up for "smart fan" and it was running the fans low.. I put the fans @ max and now i am steady @ 42-45c with prime running for about 10 min now...

i will get some arctic and then try running the fans a little slower..

ANy other advice

what about replacing the stock 80mm fan? At full speed this thing is LOUD... any recommendations?

maybe you shouldnt have gotten a shuttle in the first place?

jk but yeah other heatsinks wont fit in the shuttle case. try reapllying the compound and adding a slot cooler.

well went and picked up arctic and applied it. Looks like it cooled it down some. I am running prime with fans on med and hitting about 55c max

Is 55 still too high?

I don't think that's necessary....

AS5 recommend to use 1 1/2 grain size of the compound and must be smooshed when the HSF is installed..
