Hello everyone! I am in big trouble with my HDD... I bought it from computer geeks and the warranty just ran out on me a few days ago. My computer won't recognize the hard disk. I mean looking at the CMOS it's configured correctly but it won't go into windows and give mes like 1701 error. I have tried to fdisk it,b ut I can't even go through that coz the computer won't recognize it's there. Please help me. I just want to get the info off that disk as it is several months work... And yes... SHAME! SHAME! I do not backup... :(

HELP! ANYONE? THANKS!

Are you saying that when you go into your BIOS, your hard drive shows up on your CMOS screen, but if you boot from a floppy and run fdisk, you can't create or delete a partition on that drive?

Yes. The CMOS detects it correctly. I never heard any clicking sound or anything from the drive, it's seems to run smoothly (no clicks or dings). However when I run it by itself as the master I get a 1701 error message. And when I try to use floppy drive with FDISK it keeps saying that it can't detect any hd. When I use it as a slave it won't come up either in Windows ME. Any ideas? This happened when I installed Windows XP and decided to uninstall it because there's too many incompatiblity issues with my older hardware. Please any ideas is greatly appreciated.

With those symptoms, I'd try a low level format.

Does the manufacturer of your hard drive have on its web site any diagnostic utilities for its drives? Perhaps something like that would shed some light on the problem.
