help: hard drive problem

I'm helping a friend out with his computer. Here is the problem. Sometimes, when the computer is first turned on, during the drive detection, the hard drive is not detected. Under Primary drive, it doesn't list anything. Then it gives an error like "Invalid system disk." I'm assuming that's refering to the missing hard drive.

Last week, I'm transferring some files through a network to my friend's computer and it reboots on me in the middle of the transfer. Then it goes through the "Invalid system disk" problem during boot up.

What could be the cause? Thanks in advance for your help.

On the hard drives I suggest shorter cables. The less slack in the cable the better. The data transfer speeds on thes cables is quite fast and they should have 80 wires. The standards call for a maximum length of about 18 inches. I know they sell longer cables, but I dont recommend you use them for a hard drive.
