My GF's laptop started making clicking noises over the weekend. Today it went nuts and then died. The sound, of course, was the hard drive coughing up its last breaths :(. She has three years of work on that computer and is screwed unless she can get back the data. An IT guy at her company said it would cost $3000. Is this true? and if not, how much would it cost?

Try removing the HDD and connecting it as a slave to your PC (get an adapter). You can then try lost and found or this.

[*]You could send it off to Drivesavers (800) 400-1904, but they charge a small fortune.

You can request a quote online from Ontrack. The last time we sent a drive to them, it was around $1100. Price depends on brand, size, model, etc.

Oh and you pay the fee whether they can recover anything or not. :(
